No, not flashlights!

I had intended to use some pine resin that I had collected earlier in the week but i had forgotten to put it in my pack when I built this thing earlier today. - So I ended up using fat wood from some fallen pine that I picked up - it worked fairly well - burned for a solid 15 min, enough to walk a mile or more in the dark. ( I know that this isn't the best torch out there, and you can use a cloth and oil to make on that burns for over an hour - but thats def not as cool, well maybe)

If anyone else has made anything like this, you're welcome to post up some pics

Sorry I forgot to take pictures until after I got started..

Here you can (kinda) see how I went about this, First: I split a Maple branch into four pieces, wedged them with pieces of Cedar, fluffed Cedar bark, and pieces of fat wood. Then, I made a sort of container around the top of the handle using small pieces of Cedar that I split up, and attached them using hemp fibre. Inside of there, the four or fiver larger pieces your can see are Oak - I put the Oak in there for a longer hotter burn - then stuffed it with more fluffed Cedar bark, and chunks of fat wood. **Special shout out to my hand model**

I made this thing earlier this afternoon and it took nearly all the self control I had to wait until it got darker to light'er'up

It burned just as I hoped it would, I was pretty happy with that.

Then I took my torch and headed for that light at the end of the tunnel...

Thanks for looking

I remember during one camp out, having a line of kids behind me with fatwood torches, coming down the hill. It was so fun. We used an axe to split along the grain, so that there was enough surface area for them to catch. One kid used a rock and smashed his so it was splintered

A Birchbark torch and a Cherrry bark torch:

Although not a torch, still primitive lighting - rolled Mullein leaf wick and oil (corn oil - ok, not completely primitive) in a mussel shell.

I used an abolone shell as a snuff lantern once. I started to burn the shell. NEVER AGAIN. SMELLS WORSE THAN BURNT HAIR!
