Well, I'm trying to decide... Abondon the ease of one-handed opening with my P.O.S. paraframe and go back to carrying my old Imperial slipjoints (got three, two nice ones and one...well lets just say its a user).

Actually I really don't think I EDC the gerber for any other reason than it is extremely easy to open. Cuts like crap, doesn't take an edge, and looks way too mean for its own good.

So lets vote:
A. Continue EDC of the gerber POS
B. Switch to my good old Imperial slips
C. Spend $20-30 I really don't have on the Byrd Meadowlark in g-10

Oh btw, maybe I should have mentioned I just can't sleep tonight :o

Invest $22.55 and buy the Byrd Meadowlark with G-10 handles from New Graham Knives - Amazing quality for the price.

Yeah I've been seriously contemplating that... I just don't have much extra cash these days since I went back to school. Man do I miss working, but I guess in the long run a degree is worth some temporary financial pain...

BTW, how are their shipping prices?

I would go with the imperials. Of course you should get the Byrd asap, and then carry both.

Use your Imperials until you save up enough money to buy a nice Benchmade 710 or a Spyderco Military.

Good luck,
Allen

I have no use for a $100+ folder. I'll probably end up carrying one of the imperials and the gerber for a while and eventually pick up a byrd.

You know - it's funny you would mention a slippie:) After I got my Caly 3 and ZDP Delica (a G-10 Meadowlark came with the Caly), I just kinda "lost interest", so to speak in what was out there in the "new stuff", and was just itchin' to buy sum ting..... so I ordered a slippie - Queen Black Cherry Canoe/D2. I have a couple of Case and Buck slippies and it's actually pretty amazing how versatile they are. SAKS can be underestimated either.

I guess it's what you are planning to do or are currently doing that's gonna drive it:) If you really can get by without the one hand opening, AND the slippies aren't collectors, no reason not to use the slippies - especially if you can't afford it. Nice thing about the Meadowlark, though, is that it's pretty user friendly, does hold a pretty good edge, and more than adequate for most things. Based on what you've stated, slippies might be answer 'til you have more cash:)

Nothing wrong with a slipjoint; American men have been carrying them for hundreds of years. The natural handle materials and vintage workmanship will add some class to your day. :)

In college? You might consider a Swiss Army Knife. Great cutters, and you'll never have to search a strange kitchen for a bottle opener. Smoky Mountain has some Wengers on closeout for $1.99-$3.99.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

I willing to bet that there are a few value meals and snack machine expenses that could be cut out that would allow you to get the Byrd. Also you might be able to shave few dollars off if look around a little, otherwise I would stay with the slipjoint. I've not impressed at all with the Gerber, my dad had one, I bought him a Delica to replace it.

D. A Kershaw Vapor. Great size, good design, discounted prices @Wallyworld.

The framelock is more reliable than Gerbers linerlock and just as easy to open.

Oh, I'm well versed on my options, but I think I'll hold off on buying anything else for at least a few weeks. Stopped at the surplus store after work today (was a good shift for me, made decent bones!) and was musing about the spydies and BM's. Played with the spyderfly for a while, I actually wouldn't mind one! Anyways, picked up a cheapy bali; a Cheetah for $15. Its actually a lot nicer than my last CCC bali, ever has washers and machine screws!

Anyways, thats actually a good idea about the SAK, haven't carried mine since I was a kid (and bottles get hard to open with a lighter after 8 or 9).

But here's a shot of my collection for your pleasure (or to call me a mall ninja!). Figure I'll bring the white and trashed imperials with me as well as the gerbers (they are fun to sharpen and then dull) and possibly my SAK now that its been mentioned...

*cough* student loans *cough*

seriously though, I'd look at the byrd. It's a very nice knife for minimal investment. I've owned a Spyderco Native myself, and have to say the quality was top-notch, even if the knife itself wasn't for me.

What would you be more happy with? The slippies, or the byrd?

I got a thing for one-hand opening. My slips are very nice, but I just never carry them because its a hassle to dig them out of the pocket then open them. Even with the cheapy gerber its an easy motion to pull and open.

But I'm gonna hold off for a little bit on the byrd in g10 since i just got a cheapy cheetah bali, and that should at least keep me entertained.

Go with the slippies and the sak. It covers all the basis, and after a while you won't miss the one hand opening next to the slicing ability of a carbon slippy. In a month or two if you have some spare cash, buy an eye-brand carbon sodbuster.
