Torx Bit Sizes

I have a few knives with Torx Screws holding the scales on. The size seems to be between a 6 and 7, but I can't find a size 6.5 anywhere. Anyone have a clue?

Thanks,

There is a US size and a metric size, maybe you need the other one. It may not be called metric, but it's a different sizing.

Great...metric Torx bits, I really wish we could all agree on one measuring system. I'm sure the tool makers love to keep changing things up though!

What torx bits are you using? You can have this problem if you use badly-made torx bits that don't fit the sizes exactly. If you don't have a good set, I'd recommend Wiha's.

Not to steer the thread too far off-topic, but I would appreciate a working source for a driver for those weird little so-called security bolts, such as are on Leatherman Wave. They look like Torx, but they are not. Th drivers are are out there, but apparently one needs top-level DOD clearance or a letter from your local police chief or perhaps a bishop to buy them retail. Probably easier to get a machine gun. Many thanks if you know of a source. Also be curious to know howcum this peculiar situation exists.

I've only read a thread where someone could not remove the torx bits from a US made knife handle, they were in Australia or Europe. I'm no expert, but that was in another thread.

Amazing, I've never heard of that before. I cannot find any in existence actually. I do know that there are some really poorly made bits that are not true to size though.

Those are just security Torx bits...you can get them all sorts of places without any trouble. ;)

As far as the OP goes, I think you just have some off-spec drivers. I also suggest Wiha.

I concluded that it was a metric/imperial issue, one that I had experienced too, when a forum member from Australia posted about problems with removing handles on an ESEE knife, I believe. I suspect your issue is similar, so look for metric vs. Imperial/SAE bits.

Try to find the closest one, soak the blade in warm water, then slowly give it a try. Many torx screws are slightly off depending on the bit/screw. Take it to your local hardware store and ask if they have anything that fits.

I knew I saw that somewhere, so I'm not crazy! Well, maybe not this time.

Everyone did decide on a measurement system.

We said no. I like what one platinum gent said once. "The metric system is the measurement system of everyone that was ONCE a super power." Not an exact quote. It kind of makes sence if you think about it.

Another vote for the Wiha drivers. The pivots on my Leatherman Wave are not regular security Torx, but a security five-point star drive. Torx screws and drivers have six points.

ESEE knives use hex keys/allan wrenches not Torx though. Now I'm really confused... :(

Turboscooter-- see Bill1170's post above. I have a Wave, too, and regular Torx security just don't fit. Alas. What earthly reason could Leatherman have for inflicting such nonsense on the world? Isn't it bad enough to have SAE and Whitworth and metric and all the other proprietary crudola?

pretty sure there is only one measurment system for Torx, ie. T25 T20 T15 and so on. i am a master mechanic with Snap-On toolboxes full of tools and that is all i have ever seen for torx sizes. Tamper proof bits are the same size system, just the hole in the middle of the bit. If i am wrong, it would be new to me. hope it helps. Going to buy all the small sizes for my knives today when Snap on stops by. Torx and Allen.

I was confused as well, from the start. ESEE knives use allen wrenches, and there is only one system of torx sizes.

Bizarre...I always thought they were were 6-point security Torx. Guess I just never looked at them close enough! I guess the necessary drivers are 5-point security Torx.
