I have access to various bits of a German spec steel at work. It is supposed to be comparable to 5115. The name is 16MnCr5 1.7131. With an advertised carbon content of 0.14 to 0.19 and a surface hardness of 58 -62, it seems like it would be a decent steel to use. Any experience working with this alloy or something similar?

Something doesnt make sense here.

If the carbon content is .14-.19%, an HRC of 58-62 seems impossible. While im not too knowledgeable about exotic alloys, i have never heard of any steel with that little carbon reaching those hardnesses.

Ok, retransmiten the German datasheet i have and it says it can be case hardened. I believe that is very different from a heat and quench.
