Tough all-purpose hardworking non-EDC folder?

My idea of a work knife is a Spyderco Manix 2, or even Manix 2 XL if you want a larger knife. I bought an older Manix 2 with 154cm steel for a lot less than $100, and I bought an almost new Manix 2 XL with S30V steel for just under $100.

I have a recon 1 that I stripped and use for pretty much the same thing you are looking for. I think if I was going to buy a new garage work/garden knife, I would look at Cold Steels American Lawman. The only thing tacticool about it is the black G-10, and I consider that more utilitarian and practical than tactical. I am interested in what you decide to go with.

I was also going to suggest the Cold Steel American Lawman. IMO, a great, versatile utility blade with outstanding ergonomics.

Just to update you all, (and thank everyone again for all the cool suggestions) I ended up getting a Spydie Manix2 XL, with the S30V blade. The lock was really stiff to operate at first, but now the knife is perfect for my needs. I may have already ruined the factory edge by trimming some plywood with it. :D

I ruled out some of the others mainly because I find lockbacks hard to operate one handed, and I don't like assisted openers.

It sounds like you need the right tools for the right jobs:
Bahco Laplander, Victorinox Alox Cadet, & your DPx HEST/F

Cold Steel Recon 1, Manix XL (if you can find a good price), Benchmade 810 Contego with cpm-m4 steel, it's really tough and not to hard to sharpen

I've had several Benchmade manual Adamas model 275, which are great, but at 175 you would have to find one used on the Exchange. More to your price range, a Spyderco Manix2 XL in s30v. Heavy duty, nice working size; will last and last.

Great suggestions and a great choice. It really is one of the best deals around, and a very tough knife. Best of all, it cuts things... very, very well. It might not survive torture tests as well as some, but who needs to torture their knife? It slices things up better than any knife I've owned.

A couple thoughts. The Benchmade Adamas is a beast. It is one that I have considered buying. Bit expensive for you budget.

How about a traditional....Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC) #23. It is 4.5" closed and pretty beastly. Great knife however. The single blade version runs a bit under $100 with non-stag scales.

Cancel the above.... you got the Mannix. Good knife.

Good call on the Spydie! I love my Manix's!

You gave up a HEST 2.0 for a Manix to do workshop, yard and outdoor work?? This should be interesting....

This.

spyderco tenacious or spyderco resilience

I own both and have more costly and nicer folders, but for the money they are superb and fit what you are asking for.
