Tough Decision - Paysan vs. Evo Typhoon

Apparently I will fall in the minority here - I'd say Paysan. But solely because despite mostly liking the blade on the Evo Typhoon, I don't really care for any of the rest of it. I think the Paysan is an overall very clean design. So really, I am just saying if offered a choice of either knife for free, I'd pick the Paysan.
I really like the paysan too... But in this case, between the two if get the Evo still... But most likely would get both eventually if I could.

I have that exact model typhoon and would love to own a paysan, it’s a beautiful knife. Buy both of you can. I’m probably going to buy the arius instead of the paysan because I believe spyderco overpriced it by 100$ at least, if not more; maybe if it was made in the USA they could justify it but that isn’t the case.

My Evo Typhoon has the CF scales and drop point blade. I think it compares very favorably and is similar in many ways to my Holt Specter. Both are very well constructed and similar in handle size and blade length. The Evo's blade has thicker stock but is thinner behind the edge. Its handle is even more comfortable in my hand than the Specter's great handle, partly due to the rounded scale contours, and probably also because a thicker handle is more comfortable for my XL hand. The Specter has an adjustable detent and is more free dropping on closing. The Evo weighs slightly more. Both have great pocket clips.

I know you didn't ask about the Specter, but I've only seen the Paysan in photos, so I can't say much about it, except that I wish they'd have designed a different clip for such an expensive knife. I still love the Specter, and I'm not claiming the Evo is better; just that its impressive how well the much less expensive Evo compares to it. I doubt the Evo will be available for purchase much longer, at least with this initial run. Maybe more will be made in the future; who knows?

I haven't held a Paysan, but for the price, I don't know of any knife I'd rather have than the Arius.

I did actually own an Arius for a little while. It was a super super nice knife, but Idk I didn't completely love it like most people. I think if I got one of the new ones with the inlays from this coming Bladeshow, I might feel different.

This is a neat comparison with the Specter, a knife I would absolutely love to get my hands on, much like any other knife collector. I think this comparison actually makes me really want to pick up an Evo Typhoon, so here's to hoping I can grab that Aspirated Japanese Tanto version from Bladehq this Friday! Thank you!

Side note on the Paysan: I agree with you on the clip, but I won't let that ruin the knife for me.

The new Gen 3 Arius also has a redesigned flipper tab, anodized titanium hardware, and M390 steel. It's bigger in the pocket than I like, and the blade design is very polarizing, but the Arius fits my hand perfectly and incredibly comfortably, so that's part of the appeal to me. But I've also parted with highly prized knives in part because they felt too small in my hand. These include the Shiro HatiOn, Jason Guthrie Scout, and Millit Torrent.

I wouldn't hold off on the Paysan because of the clip, either. I'd definitely be looking at aftermarket options, though. I won't be surprised if Andy Purvis releases clips for it.

I will probably try and buy both to be honest! The Arius was a great knife, just not my favorite thing ever. I mean maybe you could say that, but the Taichung factory does better work than the US factory, so it's hard to say.

That's actually the exact one I had, it had an amazing action and ergonomics, but I think I'm holding out for one with the inlays, might get it at Bladeshow. I share your same feelings for the most part, had a custom Millit Torrent come through my hands and just was kinda like eh, this is too small. Never handled a Scout or any Shiros for that matter, so it's hard to say.

That’s the absolute truth, Taichung does much better work. But i still feel like spydercos price is greedy.

Back to the arius, I’d really like to get one with the blue twill and blue hardware. Hopefully one is available to me after blade.

Yes I agree, the price is greedy, honestly that's why I waited on the Drunken. Got it off an awesome fellow member here on BF, like new in box for $335, could not pass that deal up.

Yes, that would be really really cool to have and I hope you're able to find one! Try the Koenig Knives group on Facebook, those folks always have all kinds of Arius and MG variants for sale.

If you like them both, anyone who can afford to buy a Paysan should be easily afford to buy the Typhoon too w/o even thinking about it.

I could but I won't because I don't like either of them enough. Just saying . . . LOL! ;)

OP I hate to complicate your predicament even further, but at that price point there are several other options I would consider (both under $400):
Anchovy by Kevin Foster made by AD

Haha thank you I appreciate this! I did end up purchasing an Evo Typhoon. That Anchovy is actually a pretty cool looking knife. I actually just had a custom zirconium show scale V4 Millit Torrent come into my collection briefly. It's a very nice knife, but honestly it was too pretty to carry and I just went ahead and sold it, the detent is adjustable but I wasn't comfortable taking it apart since I knew I was probably going to sell it anyway.

You bet! I snagged the exact model I was looking for, it actually went live at like 11:55 AM (EST) so that was a little sketchy, but I'm not complaining!

Nice, and congrats. I got in on the pre-order (drop pt, aspirated) and have no doubt you will be smitten once it arrives.

Take a good look at the top of the clip, where it rises up and out as the frame falls away.

Do with that as you will.

Re: the Anchovy — produced by Alliance Designs, built by Reate. Should be amazing.
