Tough Fixed Blade over 5 inches

Hey everyone,
Just seeing what people would recommend for a great all around fixed blade made of strong steel that is more resistant to chipping, rolling, etc. I realize my request is pretty broad. I'm more or less looking to see what you have all used or use frequently, or have heard are pretty extraordinary knives. My price range is $450 or less. And I'll probably be using it for chopping, bushcraft, cutting heavy line/rope, hunting and many other hard tasks. Shape or make doesn't matter, definitely open to custom and small knife makers. Much thanks in advance.

-Mitch

I would have a custom made to your specs in A2 by a good Custom maker.

Other than that maybe a Busse Team Gemini, Swamp Rat RMD or Survive GSO series.

Some others:

  • Fehrman First Strike (7.5"), Last Chance (5.5")
  • Knife Research Legion (6.7"), Enki (5.5")
  • Busse Team Gemini LB (7.75")
  • Bark River Bravo 2 (7"), 1.5 (5.8")

Bark River Bravo 1.5 has a 5.8" blade made from A2, and can be found for around $210 with a tough Micarta or G10 handle. A few dollars more and you can get the same knife in 3V or S35VN. If you want something changed, like the thumb ramp removed or the clip point reground as a drop or spearpoint, send it to Bark River and they will do it for the cost of shipping.

Here you go Mitch

This is a Randall Made Knife 7 1/2 inch blade, company has been around for a while (1937 or there a abouts) this is a Model 14 with a full tang. I have had it for around 20 plus years, been to some interesting places and has seen some hard use. If I had to go to hell and back and had a choice of any knife on the market this would be the one I'd take. There are many hard use knives with exotic steels out there, but none have a 75 year history and have been in every major conflict/war since WW2. The 4 year wait is testament to their popularity and quality, however on the forums and ebay the Model 14 could be had around your price range. Good luck with your search.

Check out agrussell.com for Randall's.

My votes go to either the Ontario Afghan, or the Becker BK2, but thats also cuz my price range isn't as large as yours :-)

I'm loving the suggestions! Checking each one out one by one. I'm digging the Big Christ knives as well as several other. Might get a Randall, though I know the wait is long. Won't be receiving one until 2018 at the soonest. But once again, thank you all for the help and feel free to keep the suggestions coming!

A.G. Russell has some Randall Made Knives in stock. Best to check the link and then call them for availability.

If you want to spend more look at a ruana 26 , they are a hand made heavy duty knife! Mine is my hunting knife that don't get dull

Bark River Bravo 1.5 is excellent, as is the A-2 tool steel, and well within your budget (you could even get two for $450!!):

Google for "Randall dealer". One of them will be able help you secure the #14 which you want in a few months. You just pay a slight premium or the current price depending on the dealer you go for. I received mine in 3-4 months. Good luck to your search.

Look for a Don Shipley made camp knife. About a 6.5" forged 5160 blade, flat ground, thin edge, dropped handle in G10. I have one and used it alot this weekend at our camp and in my back yard taking out a huge multi floral rose bush and berry bush intertwined with vines. Took about 2 hours and have to say this thing is a beast for a 6.5" blade. Very blade heavy too due to the tapered tang which is exactly what you want for chopping etc. Extremely sharp too. Decent kydex with belt loop and well under 150 bucks. Money well spent. The thing seems to me it would survive a nuclear bomb it is that robust. keepem sharp

PS it has a blade shape similar to a butcher knife but very heavy duty
