Toughest, best edge-holding knife under $30

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I used to have some cheap $10 knives from China made from 1095 steel, it was tough, hard, and took a razor sharp edge. I stabbed open a lot of big metal containers containing tar, which we used as fuel. The knife, despite heavy stabbing into metal, retained its shape in nearly perfect condition and was ready for more stabbing each time. We also did a lot of prying. Meanwhile, my friend had an expensive BG-42 knife which quickly got a broken tip when used for the same purpose.

I would prefer not to carry any specialized tools, just one knife to use for all purposes when I go deep hiking in the woods. It will also be used for shaving wood and magnesium.

I like the RAT knife suggestion but the handle does not look balanced to me. Also, the knife I am looking for should be able to take a lot of flex w/o damage.

Where can you use tar as a fuel? Hell? If you are working in hell it would explain why you have 1 post per year, I hear you guys have been really busy lately. Anyway, your going to want something with a very high temper temperature, and you're going to want to keep it in a plastic sheath when not in use due to all the burning sulfer down there. I'd recommend a carbon steel Mora. you can get them on eBay for $10 and they are awesome blades. I always carry one while hiking and use it more than my much more costly woods blades. They are made from very well heat treated 1095 and they're known for their strength and excellent sharpness. My favorite one has a green rubber handle and green sheath. Good luck.

Yeah, I wouldn't pick BG-42 for stabbing metal containers.

Now a can opener, that has some potential.
