toughest folder, recommendations?

I just bought a CS Ultimate Hunter yesterday. That thing is built like a tank.

if you need something to take a lot of abuse get a fixed blade. But if you want a really tough, capable, and easy to clean/ maintain folding knife. get a Sebenza.

P.S. dont get a kabar MULE. My friend has had to send two back for unlocking in use. talk about some nasty cuts and even stitches.

What do you mean? The Fulcrum has a pocket clip and a 3 3/4 blade.

Exactly for the tasks you mentioned (although the high probability of losing your knife in a foreign country might makes me leery too. . .)

Whoa! Blimp crew? Want a dose of acrophobia?

For a more affordable folder with about the same durability, try looking up a SOG Vulcan, it is still new on the market, but believe me it is one hell of a knife! It has put up with me a lot. It is fairly thick for a folder and has the arc lock which can also be tested to 1000 pounds at the lock. This knife can be found for about a hundred dollars ($100) Here is the link for this knife, http://sogknives.com/store/VL-01.html , and here are the stats for it as well:

My buddy had a SOG Flash I (partially serrated) and we put it through some abuse before the blade snapped clean right where the serrateded edge begins. It was a tough knife but, when we pounded it into a log half way and then tried getting it out by bashing the sides trying to wiggle it free, it snapped.

In no particular order I have owned and used:

Sebenza

Strider SMF

CRKT Large Crawford Kasper

Manix

D'Allara

I still find it hard pressed to beat that old CRKT.

I know what you mean about the CRKT. It was the only knife I have ever lost:( I still miss it.

Elaborate on the Mule. I've never had any issues

Thanks folks, I have trimmed my choices down to Three, the Buck strider 889, the Spyderco Mannix, or the Benchmade Mini Ruckus. I should choose in a couple weeks, and I will try to gets some picks on how it holds up. Thanks for all the suggestions!

As much as I like the Benchmade Mini-Rukus 615, the Strider Buck 889 is probably going to be the best knife for the price. Plus you won't feel guilty using it as it is only around 50~60 dollars. I like using my SBMF (strider buck military folder) because of those reasons and it is a very durable knife. For a liner lock it is very sturdy and has zero walk and talk. If you have the money to burn, get the mini-rukus, but for ease of mind I'd go for the SBMF.

Good choice with the Manix, but you'd better decide REAL QUICK if you want it. It's just been on the "Discontinued Models" list of Spyderco and such models disappear or become insanely expensive REAL QUICK too .

Very cool gig!

I'll back up Keith_H and BlazenGem, A Sebenza would do the trick. The small comes in at just under 3" and the large is just over 3.6."

Strong lock, pivot pin means never adjusting the pivot tension, it's made of steel and titanium . . . what's to break?

My two cents.

Thanks for the input so far, i am going to research these, and others as more opinions come in. This is a great start. I didn't give to many details so as to not influence anybodys decisions. Good statements and questions were brought up so I will fill in some blanks.
I have and will be taking this knife into forein countries, I have spent some time in Brazil and China, and have learned that although a fixed blade knife is frowned upon, folders are given more leeway. The "four inch or less" length is set because in brazil I learned the hard way, that although the legal length of a blade is four inches, the quick measurment police use is the width of their palm. so, slightly shorter than four inches is playing it safe. In China, I have seen the palm used to measure blades as well.
The knife will be used to practice fire making skills, food gathering, and digging roots and catholes. Sometimes the handle will be used to tighten turnbuckles on cables. It will strip wire as well. I do have a myerchine rigging knife that is nearly perfect for what I want, and agree that the locking spike makes sense, but as mentioned, it does not have a pocket clip.

The pocket clip is neccessary because I also carry a flashlight and a leatherman on my belt, and I climb a mast at work, ( I am a blimp crewman) and climbing through the mast cables snag on the sheaths.

Thanks again, the answers being given are very helpfull.

After browsing thru the responses , I'm wonering how many responders payed attention to this reply from the original poster ?

First off , I can understand the need for an all purpose knife that if you needed to , could be used for digging and other very hard uses of a knife , given your profession.

This is why I would nix near every blade mentioned in this thread , most especially anything costing over $100.
Come on guys , a Sebenza for possible digging use ? Isn't their a law against that ?
That's like taking a cherried out Porsche on a 4WD cross country run.
Forget the Cadillac knives IMO , they are purty but not many would really use one for the nasty chores.

Since you will going thru many airports , I would also look into the real possibility of having your knife confiscated.

Do you want to burn 400+ on a knife , only to maybe have it taken by some overzealous airport rent a cop , or real cop ?

How about carrying something like this for your abusive chores ?

You can chop , pry , dig , cut , beat , pound , chop etc etc.... It looks more like a tool than it does a fixed blade knife.

Then get yourself a decent knife for finer chores , although with the possibility of confiscation I would still stick to something decent and economical.

Good luck.

I do like that Breacher bar! I might even order one as it can be very useful for some of the tasks i do at work. However, for the purposes here, I do need a folder.
Since the Spyderco Mannix is being discontinued, it is eliminated from my choices, as I am looking for a knife that should be available at least for the next couple of years. The Mini Ruckus i really like, and think I will get one down the road. So, that leaves me the Buck Strider 889, which the only real negative I read was the lock might be a little weak, and that was in an old review by Cliff Stamp, possibly about an older model or similar. I am living near Ft. Benning Georgia, for up to a week, week and a half. There is a store here that carries the 889, but with a half serrated blade. Now I have one more question.

As far as utility/ survival bushcraft goes, plain blade or serrated? I will ask this on another post as well. Thank you all once again.

i just got into i guess you could say high quality knives a year or so ago and the toughest i currently have is my Benchmade minigrip.
