I was reading on a post the other day about folders. Knives and pics included strider chrisreeves and spyderco. I can't find the thread anymore. I know it had a black handle (duh) but the blade seemed unusually thick. It looked like a kick ass folder but I don't remember the name of it. Any idea which one it might be or have pics of what you think is the toughes spyderco folder thanks alot.

I don't have a chinook, but the manix, and mini manix are very well built substantial knives.

ATR is pretty tough - full width compression lock tab - stout blade - could this be it? Bad news - not made in awhile.

I agree with all of the above. I'd like to add a light heavyweight that is , pound for pound, one of the strongest.

The steel framelock Volpe, with the very tough N690Co steel is really a tough little bugger for it's size. It's very well made too. It's got to be one of the toughest of the non heavyweight knives. Joe

+1 for all of the above. My Mini-Manix seems to look and feel the most bomb-proof of the Spydercos that I have, with my BG-42 Millie and Tenacious right after that.
My Volpe was my EDC today, although I'd be more hesitant to find out just how tough it is, I believe you Joe. I would probably choose something else if I new I was going to be using a knife hard, just because I would worry about marring that beautiful olive wood.
Incidentally, my Mini Manix and my Volpe are my 2 of my 3 sharpest Spydies. Don't know why, but those 3 are insanely sharp. Just ask my left thumb :)

The D'Allara, although discontinued, is still available many places and is mighty tough...

Ray :)

I've got a Manix, Mini Manix, D'Allara Drop point, and they all seem bullet proof.

That said the one I carry most is an Endura 3, and I've never heard of one busting.

I think just about any Spyderco folder will serve you well, and is strong enough to do anything that can be expected of a folder.

How bad did it bite you? I have pretty much the same experience with the two knives mentioned. They are very well made, with excellent steels. The VG10 can also get very sharp, but my ZDP Stretch 2 is the sharpest production knife I've ever had out of the box. A kershaw JYD2 SG2 was a close second in out of the box sharpness. Both could honestly whittle a human hair without trouble right out of the box. Joe

5.56, those are some very nice pics:thumbup: Thanks!

I'd say the Manix is the toughest folder I own, but I think the thin-ish tip knocks it out of top place. How do the tips on the Chinook variants compare?

Some notable "sure looks tough" designs: Lil' Temperance & Bram Frank Gunting.

The Mini Manix bit me when I was being stupid, trying to wipe off some residue of on of the Sharpmaker rods while still holding the knife. Scribed a 1/2 inch crescent shaped flap beside the nail, took 2 months to get feeling back in that area, bled pretty good. The Volpe got me when I was cutting a piece of rope that I didn't see had a plastic zip tie as well, glanced off the zip tie, buried itself in the back of my thumb. Thankfully, the bone stopped it from going all the way through . Much blood, much super glue, 3/4 inch scar. Super glue is my friend, I prefer it to waiting 3+ hours in an emergency room for a few stitches, and I don't consider it an emergency anyway.
My ZDP Endura was the least sharp knife I've ever had out of the box, and I found out diamond rods were a necessity. But only after trying to reprofile/sharpen without them. Still not as sharp as I my other knives, but it's going to Mr. Krein eventually, so I'm not too concerned about it. My Blur and JYD II in SG2 are ridiculously sharp, I'd love to see a Spydie in that steel.

The Chinnok was designed to be used in a brutal fashion. That is why the thick tip and extra heavy liners and handle weight.

I would say the Chinook is the toughest overall the spydies.

I find the Manix and Chinook probably the heaviest-duty overall, with my personal preference being the Chinook. I avoided it for a long time because all the pictures are in profile, and the tip doesn't look robust, then someone here said it was thick, so I got one. Turned around and got another right away. :)

By the way, the Military linerlock is not a problem. Too many versions have been used hard for too many years for us to have doubts about it. Linerlocks are not inherently weak, but a poorly made one -- like any lock poorly made -- will endanger the user. But the Military is not made for super heavy duty as much as for super cutting.

Spyderco has specialized machines to break their knives. Unless something has changed the Manix won and the Chinook was right there at the finish line.
