Toughest thing I've done in a while.

Yvsa,

My daughter isn't like that. She would consider that an invasion of the family privacy and would be very uncomfortable.

However she was going to do a paper on "Native American Influences on Contemporary America", but when she got to the research site it was Senior's Night and the casino parking lot was full.

So she came back and went to Ha's Vietnamese restaurant down the street, ordered a Margurita and a plate of Hot Spicy Tofu and did a paper on "South East Asian Dietary Influence on Native California Cusine".

Ben any time you see a "Hehehehe" in front of a sentence by me you can bet I'm pokeing fun and teaseing.
I didn't mean any offense.:o
It's a common ndn joke about today's ndn family and very few ndns haven't heard it.
What's so sad is that it's often true and still the anthro's don't understand us.
Perhaps that's a good thing I think.;)

The ndn wars with the US Government aren't over. They're just well hidden now by the US Government under guises of mining, water, oil and other mineral rights, among other atrocities.
The Osage were lucky more than smart as their treaty with the US Government allowed them ALL rights to their land. The other thing that clinched it was the fact that the Osage Bought their own reservation.
During the '20's there was a "ring of terror" in Osage country. Back then we still weren't considered human beings and therefore had to have a non-ndn as a guardian that exercised all the power over our money and other rights.
The ring of terror consisted of the guardians offing their Osage charges. A common method of killing an Osage charge was an extremely large dose of morphine admistered under the arm where it wasn't noticable. The Osage would then be dumped on a railroad track and a fifth of whiskey poured in their mouth and over them.
One reason we became known as drunks.:( :grumpy:

Recommend to your daughter that she read "The Two Lives of Sybil Bolton"
It's an excellent book about the Osage people during the 1920's!!!!
Tells it exactly like it was. Those days haven't been forgotten by the Osage either. Many had grandmothers and grandfathers, great uncles and aunts that suffered the many afflictions delivered upon the Osage during that era.
There's still a few places in Oklahoma that aren't safe for us ndns after dark, sometimes even in broad daylight.:( :grumpy:
The situation is even worse in some other states!!!!

Your daughter picked a very interesting profession to go into. I wish her the best!!!!

I knew you were joking and I appreciated the humor. My daughter would also. One of her pet peeves is the insensitivity of anthropologists toward the cultures they are trying to understand.

I also lived in Oklahoma for a few years, both in the western part of the state between Cordel and Elk City and in the central part around OKC. I know very well the prejudice and bias you're talking about. I have also seen it in the South aimed at Blacks, and I see it here in California aimed at Mexicans.

As a matter of fact, I can't think of any place I have lived in the U.S. that I haven't seen one group feeling superior to and trying to subjugate some other group.

That's one of the human traits that I hold responsible for most of the world's problems, and it’s one I wish we would outgrow.

Yvsa, i guess the same time this was happening to the Osage, Oklahoma was entering the dust bowl and whites were migrating to Calif. Once there, they were captive labor, starved, jailed, beaten. My mother told me the fruit growers one year in Orange county dumped most of a crop of oranges into the Santa Ana River because of poor market price while starving pickers watched helplessly, armed police preventing them from rescuing the fruit.

Once someone decides one group is 'scum' it's predictable what they will do to that group without a blink. 13 million gypies and jews found that out in WWll.

Sounds to me we had our own holocaust here. I'm glad I wasn't an ndn during the 20's.

munk
