I was cleaning out my mom's very scary basement this weekend and came across a few 'toys' from when I was a kid that I had all but forgotten about. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same! These were all acquired somewhere around age 12-14. Here are some pics and explanations:

Here is one of those hatchet/knife combos where the knife fits into the handle. On it's first trip into the woods when I was a lad, the plastic handle snapped right in half. Really turned me off of any plastics on a hard use tool, which is why my endorsement of the Fiskars is so meaningful. I'm going to check and see if the nice sheath with exterior pouch will fit my Fiskars, which would rock. (An unused magnesium firestarter was also found hidden in that pouch!)

This is a knife that a boyfriend of my older sister gave me, which he had made (from kit I think). It's 420 stainless. This one actually did see many trips into the woods. I also found an Ontario Spec-plus blade that looks just like a K-Bar but with the black synthetic handle, which he gave me and I've made my 'truck knife'.

Survival shovel? This has edges marked as 'hammer', 'saw', 'hatchet', 'wrench', 'can opener', etc. It's also got a hollow handle that I'd apparently stuffed with a razor, matches and a fishing weight. There is a nice little ball compass in the end as well. Funny! Clearly didn't see much use.

This was a gift from my dad when I was in elementary school, one of those 'survival knives' that I'd say most people have owned at one time or another. Also a hollow handle, with a 'sheath' that does a million things. it's got a bolt cutter, slingshot setup, whistle on outside, and sharpener on the back. The inside pulls out with a rubber sling, razor, badnaid, pencil and harpoon/gig. Very funny stuff, but some of the extra goodies may be very useful in my 'uh-oh' kit. Pics:

I also found one of those folding military type shovels, which has been pretty well used but is in great shape. It will also probably end up in the truck. It's not pictured, but I think everyones seen more than a few of them..

All in all, a pretty cool haul of stuff! At least lots of memories around all of it. It's funny to see how your interests and tastes change from when you're young, and which parts stay the same!

Coolio! I had a trip home (first time in 12 years) and my dad plonks a box down next to it. In it were all my old knives from when I was a kid, what a great walk down mewmory lane that was. It very true, you can see what has changed, but also what has remained the same. ;)

I used to think that United cutlery was cool.

Hey, I had a survival shovel at that age too. I beat the living snot out of mine though. It didn't survive. I remember thinking how cool those survival knives with slingshots were, but I wasn't allowed to have one :grumpy:

pitdogs son here,

The little harpoon looks pretty kool and i imagine quite handy if you got lost near a lake.

i used to have that exact same 'survival' knife. bought it off e-bay for like 12 bucks. gave it to a friend.

me too! had that exact same knife... wouldn't be too out of this world if i were from the states.. but am in the Philippines!! i think i still have it .

Ha! Funny how many others have had that knife before. Guess it was more common than I guessed! Surprisingly, the blade doesn't have any play at all in it. I thought after this many years it would be rattling like hell, but it's hanging in there. Must be that high-quality chinese surgical steel! ;)

I pulled the EXACT same "Survival knife" out of my parent's basement a couple of months ago as well...

I spent a couple of weeks trying to kill it... It was thrown, battoned, used as a nail, hammer, shovel... All to no avail.

I ended up grinding a recurve into it and sharpening it, and it's now my wife's bed side knife.

The old saying "A good dog is where you find it" seems to certanly apply to steel as well.

I'm going home next week, and I think the only thing my Dad is got waiting for me is my baby teeth! Great find, the shovel looks pretty neat. Does it feel sturdy enough?

Nice find! I keep meaning to dig around in my moms garage, I know I have lots of old camping gear in there somewhere.

I really am interested in trying a few of these out on the next camping trip. The kit knife should be a lot of fun if I can ever get it sharpened.

Anyone know if it's possible to take off that plastic from the head of the hatchet? Or how it attaches? I'd really like to try and rehandle it with wood, but if there is no hole for it, it's as good as garbage.
