Saw this the other day in an urban wildlife refuge..THere are no Deer or herbivores larger than a muskrat known to be there. and no place near by that harbors domestic animals.. THis track was alone in a single patch of wet sand on the trail there is a case folding knife that is 4&1/4 inches long next to the track for scale.. any help would be great...Again there are no deer or similar or related animals known to inhabit this area. Thanks

I have no idea what it is. But I can tell you that it's been there for a few days, all the crispness has eroded. I'd say three days or so old (depending on the weather and proximity to water). Kind of looks like the print of the ball of a human foot. It has the general shape.

No other signs around it at all?

Without getting a look at the area and knowing the wildlife I couldn't tell you.

Seems to me whatever made it didnt weigh much. looks pretty soft there. Im kind off thinking it may have been a bird of some sort lying down .

looks like someone was trying to make a deer track with their finger. Possibly to explain to someone what a deer track looks like.

At about 4" it is just too shallow to be an animal. The animal with a foot that large would make a deeper impression IMO. To have a foot that size, a deer, goat or hog would probably weigh well over 300 lbs. This print is about the size of a jackass... but not round enough.

Thus... we must conclude the obvious. It is a fake. ;)

Bottom right at the lower portion of the knife reminds me of a raccoon that came to a screeching stop pushing up sand in front of the track.

I'm going to guess that its an eroded imprint of a Fox Squirrel that sat there to munch on whatever he found.

Just my guess.

I Agree that its an old track, might be from a large animal, shallow track possible if ground was partially frozen, could be any thing from the family milk cow to elk or moose

one thing I was thinking was it might be a an imprint from an open mussel shell dropped by a seagull (as this is very close to the coast)

LOL Marcel... it's a case that thing eats sand for breakfast. It's an unusual thing to see a track like that there... About 100 yards away form that track I can see the Manhattan Skyline..

My first thought was that it is a young moose... The track is definitely a few days old at least - and has been rained on. The rain probably would have eroded the walls of the track inward, widening the overall shape and making it more shallow. Though, I'm unaware of any meese in New York... Yes, I said meese. :)
