Is there going to be a significant difference ? Tracy has abetter deal on shipping and he has the USPS option which I really like. (had a few bad experiences w/ups)

I'm wondering if they get the steel from the same source ??

There are a million threads about Aldo's 1095 and 1084 but not to many on USA Knifemakers selection.

If there is a link I'm missing please post it.

Thanks,

I like them both and have used them both a lot..Both great steels, in fact I noticed in the past that USA carried 1084F and the only place to get that from was Aldo..He may get some of his steel from Aldo..Eitehr way you wont be disappointed..

I could be all wrong on this, so take it with a grain of salt. In fact, I'd suggest you contact Tracey and ask him personally. I've always found him to be a nice and friendly guy to deal with.

I looked over his steel a while back and noticed that a lot of his sizes matched Aldo's perfectly. For example, I came across CPM 154 in a .103 to .113 size.

I'm betting that Tracey buys his steel where ever he can get quality steel at a good price so he can mark it up and resell it. He could have only one source or many different suppliers. Like I said, give him a call or drop him an email and I'm betting he'll tell you himself whether or not it's the same.

the 3/8" thick 1095 from Aldo will be different, has Vanadium in it. The thinner stock will be closer to what everyone else has.

Thanks for the response .

I only asked because I wanted to put in an order. I think ill wait till monday and givehim a call.

I do know that Tracy gets (or got) his 15N20 from Aldo. I love Aldo, but I can't afford to buy $200 worth of steel at a time and shipping on a single stick of steel is almost or more than the steel.

Call Tracy. Like the above guys said, he's a nice guy.

I don't think Aldo has a miminium order. I've ordered both large amounts and quite small orders.

I don't think he has minimums either. I never order large amounts, maybe 3 bars at a time, and the shipping is very reasonable.
I live in n.y. though so maybe shipping further would start to become prohibitive on smaller orders.

I have ordered 3-4 bars at a time from Aldo also, and have never found the shipping out of line. and I live in NE.

Aldo doesn't have a minimum order. I just can't afford to spend $300 at a time to make the $20 shipping worth it. If I'm only ordering $40 in steel, $20 to ship makes the order too expensive. Maybe I should talk to him and see if there are alternatives. I absolutely don't want this to be seen as an attack on The Man. He's a great guy, just at this time his shipping doesn't work for me.

In the past I've had good luck ordering 1095 from Kelly Cupples. Orders over $100 included shipping. Size selection is limited, but he does have some other steels to choose from (I've also purchased 1080 from him).

You can find his contact info on the High Temp Tools Webpage.

Be happy you are in the US

You have relatively cheap shipping compared to what we have to pay here.

Yeah but Aldo's 1095 and Jantz's 1095 aren't the same. You never really know what you are getting with Jantz but you always know what you're getting from
Aldo.

Only ever got one stick (36" 3/16x2) from them and it HT'd fine, worked well... Won't get any more from them if that's not the norm... I luckily have a reliable local source but needed 2" width for a project and got it from them... Thanks for the head's up.
