Trade horns for a custom knife?

Hellow everyone,

This is my first post, thanks for having me. I have had some yellow/white ram horns laying around for a while and was thinking about having a knife made in trade for the horns. I would be willing to trade the horns for a knife made with them. I also have a 15LB brown Elk horn I found a month ago this could be part of the trade also, but I would probably request another knife. I don't know if my trade request is appropriate. Please respond if you are interested. PS. The blade design I am looking for is a skinning variation for this fall's hunt.

Thanks for looking

Robert

As a knifemaker I cant make a trade like that and come out ahead. The horns are simply not that valuable especially after one handle is taken out. It takes several days usually to make a knife. You didnt say how many rams horns you have laying around but I can buy very nice rams scales from Alpha Supply for only $35 per set.

Robert, I should have given you a better explaination in the email response I sent, sorry.

I think a conservative estimate of the value of the horns and antler shed is about $100. It's going to be a tough trade for most knife makers, when you consider a skinner will cost about $200-250. A set of horns isn't a great trade for one knife, let alone two. Take a look on ebay and www.alphaknifesupplies.com, that should give you an idea on trade value. Hopefully someone will be willing to help you out. Good luck with your search.

Maybe a horney knifemaker will come along and take you up on the offer. I'm surprized Sweany didn't bite.......... :D

Well thanks for the advice gentlemen. I guess I will just have to fork over the money for a knife. And when I learn how to make knives maybe I can use the horns myself? Man I never knew untill yesterday how involved this community is. It is really astounding. Thanks again.

Robert.
