I'm new to the knife making community and I'm trying to get some opinions on getting a trademark and how important it really is? I'm a second generation machinist and have been in the trade since 1993. I always had a fascination with knives almost as long as I can remember, my father made me my first knife when I was about 5 years old. When I was in trade school back in the late 90's I had my first taste of learning about all different types of steels, how to cut them, and the wonder of heat treat! About 8 months ago I finally made up my mind that I want to try my hand in knife making. I've slowly been filling my at home shop with the tools I think I need to begin to develop this new talent. My question is, how important is it to trademark a name? I have a lot more practice ahead of me before I attempt to release anything I make to the public but I'm wondering where getting a trademark should come into play? Any info on this topic would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advance.

My thinking is not to worry about such things right now. It will be some time before you even want people to see the stuff you'll be making. Start thinking about trademarks when you are practiced enough and familiar with the steps of making different types of knives and have at least a rudimentary understanding of what is happening in the steel. When you are consistently turning out pieces you're pretty proud of then you'll be ready for trademarks. When you get there, a trademark can be a simple as a couple of lines punched in with a cold chisel to professionally made steel stamps or etching stencils.

It's more important to some than others. Only half my knives have been marked. Somewhere along the line it became not important to me to mark them. All my knives are gifts, I don't sell any.

Trademarks are important to famous makers because their name is worth something. Until your name is worth something, there isn't much point to bother with it. Trust me, you won't want your name anywhere near your first knife anyways:p

Thank you all for the advice. I just joined bladeforums and I really appreciate the advice. Aside from my full time job this knife making hobby has completely consumed my life and I couldn't be happier! It's to the point to where it keeps me up at night because all I can think about is all the different things I want to learn and try. I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of what might seem to be stupid questions so I everyone please be patient. Hopefully the good people on this site will help me keep my feet on the ground. Thanks again!
