How were traditional bolsters...and in particular radiused bolsters made? I'm thinking of the a typical bolster on a scout knife or the bottom bolster on a tear drop shape knife..the ones that are close to a true radius on sides and end. They must have been preshaped closely before being soldered and then cleaned up...but any info appreciated. For the amount of knives produced it doesn't seem that they could have been all hand shaped from bar stock to finished product as custom slips are now produced.

I am wondering the exact same thing John. I don't trust myself to free hand these on a grinder. I'm wondering if a jig of some kind that lets the bolster roll around a central pivot against the belt might work.

Done on a slack belt using the kninfe grinder. Seems like it might take a long time but after you have done a few it goes really quickly.
