Traditional Butcher

I am having a huge amount of trouble trying to upload photos from Photobucket-for some reason this site has been plaguing me for the last few days.
Fes, I havent got a scanner anymore, so I took a photo of the page in Geoffrey Tweedales' "The Sheffield Knife Book" page 292, a full advertisement of John Wilsons Butcher Knives and Steels etc.
established 1750, and used the trade mark that you have of the Peppercorn and Diamond. in that advertisement is a picture of your exact steel, item number 82.
As soon as I can load this, I will put it up here.

Happy Birthday - FES! :) Cheers!

Great story, I really enjoyed reading it and it made me smile. That steel is looking great!

Happy birthday, FES! That Sheffield-made steel was a very cool gift! Thank you for sharing the story --made my morning.

Duncan, I'm also having trouble with Photobucket... haven't been able to upload for the last 24 hours or so.

FINALLY!!! I got it, please excuse the slightly out-of focus shot- but neat to see the actual Steel of Fes's in there

...Another couple of minutes of knife related banter passed and he said "come out the back, ive something you may like"...Well, inside this dark cobweb infested old store room was an absolute treasure trove of old butchery equipment...knives,steels,stones ,lamb splitters, chopping blocks ,old scales etc etc...I did not enter the room as i was not invited to do so....

FES,

Congratulations. That last part right there sets you apart from many other men I've known-- common-sense courtesy and decency that is so integral, you don't even need to think it through.

That, and your generosity.

I'm so glad that the butcher and you both recognized quality when you saw it. :)

What a beautiful piece! Thanks especially for the close-up.

And then Campbell perseveres, and supplies:

What a tremendous find/have! Wow. That's just too cool.

Happy birthday, FES.

Good friends old and new, a new steel, and a worthy steak to boot.

FES, a belated Happy Birthday from Texas! This is amazing, as I have that exact same model of Sheffield steel residing in a drawer in my kitchen! I inherited it from my Dad when he passed away in 2010. I use it on a regular basis to keep our kitchen cutlery sharpened and ready for use. I occasionally use it to sharpen a pocketknife or two as well! Congratulations on your fine gift!

Terrific birthday present, happy (belated) birthday Fes!

I'm fortunate that there is an old butcher shop right at the end of my block, been in business since the 1920's or so. As I live in a Polish area, the kielbasa and sausages from there are fantastic.

Thanks to everyone for your comments..it was indeed a chance meeting that made for a wonderful day regardless of my birthday...Im back in that small town tomorrow for a weeks work and have a nice slippy for the gentleman ...I also have a few extras (to trade) and will hopefully get my foot in that dark, dank aladdins cave of butchery!...
