Hey guys, I was thinking, there's almost always a thread over in the general forum or the gadget and gear forum about what great new tactical gear and knives people have in their pockets, but there hasn't been one here in a while. So I want to know, what's in the pockets of us folksy people here in the traditional forum; and that includes not just knives, but other traditional EDC stuff as well. And not just us, but what did our fathers and grandfathers consider as essential enough to carry every day?

I'll start out. When I was growing up, my grandfather wouldn't leave the house unless he had at least his pocketknife, watch, wallet, keys and a handkerchief. I've adopted this same thing, only instead of the handkerchief, I usually carry a bandana.

Left front pocket - lens cloth, handkerchief, and a SAK Classic.
Right front pocket - most always a SAK Tinker. Some change, mostly the quarters, makes its way into there as the day progresses.

Back pockets stay empty for the most part.

On my key ring is a Boy Scout fire steel I've had on there since the early 90s.

I rarely go out without a pen either.

If you are asking about our grandfathers and great grandfathers, dont forget about pipes and matches. Pipes and matches were much more common. And that means the tobacco pouch would be included as edc. Also the hankerchief was a staple edc. as far as knives, the stockman I think was very typical. The sodbusters may have been used on farms and ranches, but I think a stockman or a smaller pen knife would be most often the norm for the regular men. The "multiplex" pocket knife was carried mostly by sailors in days gone by.

case jigged stag bone trapper in front left pocket (3" aprox.) I carry a sog powerlock multi tool in leather sheath in my duffell bag with also an older 4" shrade old timer (which would be for skinning game), and in a different pocket in my bag my 10" marbles trailmaker and 4 5/8" blued ruger super blackhawk loaded with .44 special hornady hollow points. I like to think I am well prepared. ;)

right front -- case serpentine stockman, cv,yellow scales
right rear -- bifold wallet, complete with bandaids
left rear -- the ever popular bandana, red or blue
left front -- zippo, leatherman side clip.
the only change is that when i'm at work the stockman transforms into a buck 889. been this way for years.

Well the pockets and sides of the body I carry on changes, but I almost always have, My tl-29 type folder, and a peanut in my pockets. I also carry a Zippo, a small 4" craftsman adjustable wrench and a bandanna in my pockets. In my wallet I keep some thread and a needle with a few safety pins, and a spare button or two. My key ring has the craftsman multi screw driver on it. This time of year I keep an altoid tin in my coat pocket with some char cloth, a candle stub, a home made steel, and a chunk of quartz in it, plus some waxed twine and a compass in the other pockets. My DNEDC* lineup is like so:

- Keys (w/ photon micro light).
- Watch.
- Cell phone.
- Pocketknife and/or Leatherman multi (I like to combo a slipjoint and a Micra, but sometimes I'll just carry my Wave on my belt).
- 8 gig iPod.
- Harmonica.
- Wallet.

* Damn nearly every day carry

Oooh, ooh, I want to play!

I have a couple different EDC setups.

The constants are:
Right rear - wallet that seems to be making a hollow, whistling sound.
Left rear - Atwood Prybaby
Left front - Case Peanut (Yellow, CV), BIC lighter
Right Front - LG cell phone
Shirt pocket - all stainless Parker Jotter and a pack of smokes
Right front belt loop - keys with Vic Classic and Sears 4-way screwdriver
On belt at about 4 o'clock - Buck 110

At work I also carry:
Victorinox Spirit Plus multitool on the belt
Case Trapper with green bone scales

Any time I'm not at work I add:
Springfield Full Size 1911
Vic Hiker

and above all else, I hope I don't fall in a lake.

It's funny, though. For years and years, my grandfather got by with a Schrade peanut and the same Craftsman 4-way screwdriver. What was it that Thoreau said???

Left front,Kershaw Scallion
Left rear handkerchief,if I'm going out, sometimes carry a stockman in the left rear along with the hanky
Right rear has a 3in Cresent wrench and a Micro Widgy, hanging from a carabiner that's clipped on a belt loop
Right front usually has some cash and whatever change that I acumulate from that day,a small Zippo in the watch pocket,a pocketwatch with a compass and a jewelers loop that also hang from the carabiner
When I go out, sometimes I swap the Zippo for a different pocketwatch,I usually dump the items on the carabiner but I still carry it for my keyring and sometimes I carry an 80s vintage Case trapper in a holster on my belt, left side.

My turn

Left Front: Keys
Right Front: Cross Ballpoint Pen, Motorola Handphone, 1984 PUMA Pony Knife
Left Back: Tissue Paper
Right Back: Wallet

When my pants have a watch pocket, the knife goes there.

Cheers,

Amir

Right front pocket; Pocket knife, rolled up bandana on outside seem, Dorcy AAA pocket light.

Right rear pocket; tobacco pouch, extra rolled up bandana

Left rear; Eagle creek wallet with 3 saftey pins, and rolled up length of dental floss in change pouch. Small home-made pad of paper to write on in back of drivers licence

Left front; leyring with house key, truck key, 4 way sears pocket screwdriver, Bison aluminum capsule with several Ibuprohen for arthritus, and a Victorinox classic on quick release lobster clasp. Bic lighter and pipe tamper tool. Small stub of wood pencil.

Cell phone is carred in a nylon holster on right hip. Pipe of the day in shirt pocket.

Being a blue collar type, I've lived my life in jeans exept for weddings and funerals. This was my edc for many years before I retired. An extra bandana can be folded into a square and then rolled up tightly so's not to take up hardly any room, but is handy to have for many uses. A small 2 inch pencil stub is small and light, but always writes, does not dry up or leak, and the graphite tip can be scraped with a knife blade and the powder used for an emergency lube on gear that is rubbing or binding and there is no oil around.

Maybe our grandfathers were smarterbetter men than us?:)

Rfront pocket knife and keys
Rback wallet
Lfront cell phone when I need it I try to get away without it when ever I can.

Let's see... One of my grandads carried a Boker lockback with a nice upswept blade. He also carried his cigars or pipe wherever he went. He had lots of different rural jobs (he managed sugar cane plantations in the Caribbean, then managed some cattle farms as well, etc) and also carried a silver handled Boker fixed blade quite often (as well as a S&W .38)

My other grandfather was a doctor, he liked the penknives that were made near his hometown Ibi (in Spain). He had quite a few and used them a lot, my favourite is one with a very pretty "damasquinado" handle (nothing to do with damascus steel), it's dark steel with gold inlays, the contrast is beautiful. He spent a few years teaching in universities across Europe in the '50s and he picked up a SAK somewhere.

Luckily, I've got all of their knives.

This is what I carry:

-SAK of some sort, usually a Huntsman, Climber or their Wenger equivalent.
-A nice slippie, lately I've been using a small stockman a lot, as well as my GEC Scout.
-Sometimes a one hand opening knife, one of my Spydercos or Benchmades.
-Tobacco pouch, pipe tool, matches, pipe (a Stanwell Calabash today) or a cigar case (with whatever habanos I fancy that day) and cigar cutter.

I always carry a small backpack or shoulder bag, it has a multitool (SwissTool Spirit plus ratchet and extra bits), a fixed blade (today it's a carbon Mora of Sweden #2), first aid kit and all sorts of useful kit (cordage, waterproof poncho, duct tape, zip ties, etc.) plus some books and a notebook.

Left front pocket: small slipjoint..lately I choose one from among a halfrich clip trapper, r bose ivory 3.5 4 bld congress, t bose orange single blade trapper, t bose WT, etc. There are others. Often in a Dens of England pouch (forgive me).
Right front pocket: key chain with house key, car key, remington knife pick, mcgizmo ti clip, ti ion xre cr2 flashlight (small, custom, very bright)
Left rear: wallet
Right rear: Halfrich or t bose 4.5 inch back pocket knife.
Shirt pocket: Mike Parsons custom green micarta pen or a dunhill cf pen, small leather covered 3x5 notebook by graphic images, NY.

I also carry a treo phone, either on a belt clip or in my left front pocket.

Left front: Keys and my damned cellphone (not traditional, I know...)

Right Rear: Wallet and maybe a large folder next to the wallet

Right front: If no large folder then a single bladed trapper, stockman, or whittler.

If there's a shirt pocket: A cheap pen... :o
