Traditional Folder Tools - Is it Flat?

I have learned more about folding knives in your post than any other and I appreciate at it. But I do have a question, you mention milling tang relief. Do you do that even using the pivot system with the bronze bushing that is in the tutorial? If I read it right the bushing was thicker than the tang and I thought maybe the milling of the inside of the scales did not have to be done. Any help would be apreciated. Ryan

Edited to add I read the other tutorial you did and it showed the relief, but do you think a smooth action could still be achieved if the bronze bushing was a little wider than the blade with no liner relief cut out?

I'm sorry it took me so long to respond to you. What I understand the reason .007" is milled out is only so the blade tang and stamping doesn't get all scratched up. If you notice old knives are not made this way and don't have bushings. The old knives springs are a smidge thicker so that the blade can rotate. Otherwise the blade would be pinched easily.

When a bushing is used, the spring and blade need to be the same thickness and the bushing needs to be only between .001" and .002" thicker. Any more than that and your blade is going to start rattling around in there.

Geeze you act like you had something to do besides answer my question. :D Possibly making some of those great looking knives?! Thanks again for the help and pictures, they have flattened my learning curve by a considerable amount. I still can't over how classy and clean those knives look.

:barf: Well...it isn't yellow bone(long story:rolleyes:) but it's finished. I had much trouble with multiple sets of jigged bone that I dyed yellow. I opted to handle this with antique peachseed jigged bone.

specs recap: 4.5" Bose "Backpocket" Pattern, D2 blade/spring, 14" hollow ground, Rc61(Wilfred Works HT), Half stopped and flush jointed, 410 SS liners/bolsters, bronze/aluminum bushing pivot.
