Traditional Knife Library

Thank you sir.

You'll have to pm/email me. Im not seeing a way to contact you. Awesome gesture by the way.

Brett, you can send him a visitor message, and yes a fine gesture.

Thanks, Will

How about just make a sticky thread at the top for "test drives request" or whatever else you want to call it, where you can post what model you'd like to try out and then any member that had that model and wanted to turn it loose for a week could respond. Then the whole transaction is between him(or her) and you. You all know each other well in here, could still keep it to paying members gold and above, whatever. Asking for a deposit would be up to the individual(s). Can't imagine many of you regulars wouldn't be willing to loan a knife for a week to an upstanding member with presence here, not to mention the "catalog" of our member presence here is far greater than any one could assemble.

Gary and I would need discuss this. If we did consider it OK, we would need to discuss it with the forum owner. It's outside the standard territory of the forums.

Do we know if Rockgolfer has received his knives back from his own Passaround...? I've often wondered how that has played out for him, which has come to mind again in light of this thread.

It's one thing to be directly responsible for one's own knives and the decisions regarding to whom one entrusts them, etc., quite another to hope that someone is keeping tabs on a varying selection of others' knives.

There is already a lot of sharing, and outright giving, that goes on behind-the scenes.

[I've evidently encouraged a few newer members to go 'way entirely by giving them knives, and I doubt I'm the only one.... :confused: :o But, I digress.]

If anything, I believe this venture may be better served by members' placing "wanting to try: ____ " in their signatures, etc., with perhaps one dedicated (non-stickied) thread for those actively participating in the sharing/borrowing etc. (not for soliciting knives to borrow) to share their impressions-- one, as a way to give back to us all for the privilege of being entrusted with a traditional forum member's knife or knives, and two, for more public accountability.

All told, however, while I understand the desire for such an enterprise, I am concerned about the feasibility and wisdom of any attempted formalization/implementation here in our midst.

I'm not saying this couldn't happen. I can say it likely wouldn't happen overnight, if it happens at all.
I'd offer up this suggestion.

Everyone that wants to borrow a knife get a paid membership. This gives you a signature line that you could use to make your request, such as;

I'd like to borrow a #15 for a week. If someone can help me out, please PM or email me.

This does a few things;
1. Keeps this subject out of the Traditional Forum, which is for the discussion of traditional knives.
2. Takes the discussion and details of any transaction outside the forum threads.
3. Helps Spark sign up a few new members.

I'm sure I could add more reasons, but you get the idea.

Great minds, Sarah

Say, now! :D

[I even took the time to write and then edit out a nod to/requirement of paid memberships in tandem with signature line requests, and still beatcha by a few minutes. Conversely, if you'd been a little bit faster, I'd be out in my yard by now. :p]

-- Thanks, Frank & Gary. :)

Awesome stroke of genius by Gary.
That way it's one on one.
►Somebody says in his signature line what he is looking to borrow. Some one else sees it and contacts that poster. They make the arrangements.
►No onus on anyone to part with a treasure unless they are truly willing and trust the person to whom it is going.
►No one has to keep track of a bunch of check-outs. Only the borrower and lender need to track it.
►A basic membership is $10 a year.
►It's a private lend. Any issues are between two members, with no responsibility on the part of BF.

You see, multiple minds are better than one. I think you all have come up with a solution. Unless there is an overwhelming desire for there to be a repository, this might serve the purpose.

At my age (experience), I've learned that I never lend out or borrow my tools. my knives, my firearms or my wife. They never come back the same!

I share this same sentiment. IMO the passaround forum already does this, in a sense.

Also sometimes if we lend something out, when they return we will then 'look' a bit harder at the knife and discover something that may have always been there, but we had overlooked it, since it was ours, but, once it goes out, we almost expect to find something gone sideways and if you look hard enough at about anything, you will find something...ask my wife ;)

The concept is a good one and I'll echo the sentiments that several people have already stated, posting a desire to test drive a certain knife and see if you get anyone that would trust you enough to allow it, would be better, well, just maybe safer. Myself, I don't loan knives out to folks at work and most friends admire the knives I have but are no where the knife knut that I am and usually just shake their head at me :)....again, ask my wife...
