Traditional Knife Terminology & Historical Reference

Just kinda thinking out loud here after reading what has been posted so far:

Would it be logistically possible to have a 2 part sticky called something like "Traditional Reference Links & Glossary" that has (1) an updatable alphabetized glossary (graphic and verbal), and (2) an alphabetized list of reference links which are sorted by subject matter, such that even when new links are added, they stay alphabetized? I assume moderators could edit the list & glossary as needed.

"Cyber-Links" to reference info are such a powerful and simple access tool, it seems like a logical approach to the question on the table here;
And, a glossary would enable newbs like me to learn from just surfing the glossary when I don't even know enough to "name" the glossary item in question.

My humble .02 thus far. :)

Edited to add: I was typing while Kerry added his last post, which is what I am trying to suggest as well, I think .:)

This is what I was thinking too, that someone could learn much about knives just by reading the glossary.

Dan Gray's sticky for noobs is a great example of stikying useful information

If there are other examples out there I would like to see them.

If we're not careful, we will create the ultimate knife encyclopedia! I like the alphabetized topic approach, Kerry et. al.
Access is the key, and it seems like the right direction!!
Maybe we can expand that list of topics, then fill it in!?!?

Dan's thread came to mind, but I thought it would be good to see what the gang wanted first. We could make a sticky and folks could PM or email Blues or myself to put in the info and links.

Great idea Kerry!

This is a must if it is going to remain a high quality reference. Hopefully it won't be too labor intensive. You could throw some of the load on others by forwarding the links that people submit to qualified researchers to give them the once over.

How about names and pics of traditional shields used on slipjoints?!? I've wondered what the names were for some of the less common shields.

Good idea. It could be listed something like:

S

Shield - various shaped metal plates, surface or flush mounted, usually on the mark side of the knife handle. See diagram (link) for examples and descriptions of each known shield.

There will probably be many items, not only shields, that would have entries similar to this one. I'm sure there are other ways to do it. We should also be concerned that we don't venture into copyright infringement.

We could also make a blown diagram of a knife on a web page and hot link all of the parts, which can drill down into a more detailed list of those individual parts.
