Traditional Knives - Rare and/or Limited Editions

The dealer in me says "you better get another one to use" But the knife lover, for the tools they are, in me says put that fellow to work.

True stuff. I feel that way myself many times although I'm not officially a dealer. Something about them being rare or limited makes me want to save them for my sons or grandsons one day. I do agree about the use, patina, and memories on the knife. I'm looking at another to have as a user. Sending the #02 on to a "collector" and will find other blades for the kiddos.

That's right!

It took me a while to go ahead and use this one:

I really don't know how much 'collector value' it had, or I lost by it not being minty any more. It seems to me that every one of GEC's knives are limited in production. So if all of them are rare, does that mean none of them really are? Does that make sense?

OT: I wish we had a subforum for trading traditionals. That could be some fun reading.

To use or not use a knife that was intentionally made in limited numbers by the maker so that collectors would desire it because of it's "rarity". Hmmm. Vs. use or don't use a knife because it is old, low numbered and in it's factory condition complete with all packaging and acessories. Artificially uncommon vs. naturally uncommon. GEC is playing a new twist on an old game. Making limited edition knives for the collectors' market is not new. Doing so consistantly in very small batches is. 500, 1,000, 1,500 was the old number. 10, 25, 50 seems to be the new one. And mostly it seems by simply changing up the handle material, or swapping out the pocket blade. I'm not sure what to think about this new artificial rarity. The twist seems to be making and selling knives to collectors which can also be used, rather than selling to users, some of whom might also collect.

This is a fairly recent aquisition. Made in 1966 before the marketing began in 1967, the first 24,000 or so were serialized for warranty control. This one is serial #00009, the 9th one made. They continued to be made for 25 years before being discontinues so, while the pattern itself is not "rare", the earliest serialized ones are truely uncommon today. So do I keep this one unused, or do I use it? Is it more or less "rare" or desirable in it's current condition than any newly made GEC? Solution... I have multiples of this knife in already used condition with higher serials so there is no need for me to use this one. To collectors of this maker, of this pattern, this knife is historicly significant. Rare without being made artificially so by it's maker. More rare by the passage of time and natural attrition of it's serial mates.

I don't know any stock answer as to "use or don't use" any GEC or other knife made artificially rare by it's maker.
