I'm a traditional knife noob, but beginning to find them strangely attractive. I'm aware of case, north woods, Gec, and TC... Are there any other brands I should be checking out?

Definitely check out Rough Rider, Colt and Marbles. All made in China, but excellent quality (and a lot less expensive than Case, GEC, etc.)..

You can get vintage USA made Ulster, Camillus, Schrade, etc for very few dollars. Good steels and great blades. Visit the Traditionals Forum here on BF and read.

I picked up each of these (and many others) for well under $20. Some were less than $10.

I'll second a trip over to the Traditional Knife section of the forums. Ton of good stuff in there.

A few more.... Canal Street Cutlery, Queen Cutlery, Tuna Valley, and many great custom makers. Northwoods and GEC are my favorites, followed by Case and Canal Street.

Rough Rider are ridiculously good if you're on a budget. Or you can get a bunch of RR's to try out different patterns and see what suits you most, then you can move up to a higher end version of that pattern, if you want.
