Really started thinking about a three blade system. If the SAK and the multi tool were around for Mears to use would he choose one of those over a good quality trapper, canoe, or stockman design??? I know many still carry those traditional patterns, and for good reason. Furthermore, do any of you carry either of those three into the woods along with a bigger blade, or two?

Mainly just curious about the validity of an old pattern. I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it type thing, kind of like the 1911 and garand styles.

It's really personal preference :) Personally I'm a 4" fixed blade, multitool, folding saw guy. It really depends on what you own, what you like, and where you're at.

I take some type of multifunctional tool. Such as a SAK, or a traditional MT. I also have a blade.. most likely it is a small FB, but sometimes I go with a small FB and a folder :)

I carry old pattern slip joints into the woods all the time. I do think, though, that as far as utility goes, a SAK or a Multi-tool might be a better route. However, I will continue to carry a slip joint; they seem classier

To me the old slip joint is just a waste of weight, why a slippie when you can carry a SAK.

I only have one slip joint and that is a 25 year old Medium Stockman.

BTW. I can't find it right now anyway

Just a daytrip I carry a swisschamp and 3-3.5" fixed blade. If im going overnight or longer I also carry a 5.5" fixed blade(CRK shadow IV).

Are they really that heavy?

After trying both, I like both.

I alternate them spontaneously. Lately I have been carrying the stockman a lot (buck 301) -it is a worthy knife pattern IMO -even to this day.

I frequently EDC a Case large Stockman with my Victorinox Spirit.
As I said in another thread earlier today i wish someone would make a Bushcrafter-focused multi-tool.
About the size of the Spirit, chuck a few of the straight-screwdriver blades and replace them with a spey blade and a sheepsfoot.
So that would be 3 blades including the regular SAK spearpoint blade.

If you guys are choosing to carry one OR the other, your going to be handing in your knifenut badges in the very near future

Both or all of them, is the correct answer, and a minimum of 3 of each pattern

It's not a matter of them being that heavy. It's more about how pointless it is to carry them both. Of course, this depends alot on how you carry. I leave the SAK in my pocket and a slip in my pack. If I lose one for whatever reason, I still have the other.

ETA: I know some people feel they have to carry both on their person. I just would prefer to save the pocket space for something else: lighter, para-cord, etc...

If I'm carrying a non-locking folder, or an MT to the woods, usually I prefer to make it a SAK. Lotsa tools, and I always take one with a good saw.
A folding saw is an awesome feature, on any MT.

Ditto for me.

I carry a Case slipjoint as EDC, so sometimes that comes along too, if I don't empty my pockets. I really don't use my leatherman's knife though, except for real dirty work, 'cause I don't sharpen them or clean them, the leatherman is mostly for the other tools.

Since most of my life is spent in my truck, I carry all I need. I have a 1 inch drop point fixed blade on my keychain, a 3 inch fixed on my right hip, a case large trapper in my right front pocket and a Sog multi on my bob hanging from the passenger seat.
The fixed on my hip gets the most use but the pliers on the Sog are used daily for pulling nails or other pieces of metal out of tires so I don't get a flat.

As for the slipjoint, I got a great deal on a carbon steel trapper. It is simply too cool not to carry(and is btw the sharpest factory knife I have ever handled) .

For camping, etc., I like a 4" fixed blade, multitool, and hatchet.

When I am at my whitecollar-type job or dressed up, I carry a small tradtional slipjoint because it is elegant looking and easy to carry in dress pants pockets.

When I am working around the property, I carry a multitool and small fixed blade in a tandem pocket sheath.

For camping, I prefer to carry a Mora and a SAK as main blades. Often I also carry an Opinel for food preparation and sometimes an EKA knife as backup knife.

I had spoken to AG Russell about having Victorinox make a knife on the Farmer frame ~ spey, sheepsfoot, and either the Sac spear blade or a turkish clip; it would still have the awl and the saw. At first he was excited about the idea, but when he researched it it wasn't economically feasible. Maybe we should all petition Vic and they would bring it out themselves?

Umm...All of the above:D When I'm out in the woods, I'll carry my belt knife, locking pocket knife, and slip-joint while the chopper, multi-tool, SAK stay in the bag. Probably a bit redundant, but A:plenty of backups and B:plenty of options:thumbup:

Theres always a pocket knife on me. Dont leave home without it. I like to carry about a 4 inch fixed blade when doing fun outdoorsy things. A Leatherman Kick gets used the most when out and about. Im upgrading to a Wave soon.
