Had a hard month at work so decided to head to our hunting lodge with a special friend ,and some knives of course! for a relaxing weekend...i built this lodge in 2000 for a select few hunters who gather on the first weekend in May for duckshooting. It is built from iconic buildings that i demolished,so there is much local history in these walls..No cell phones ,stereos, tvs etc are allowed...this is where we press the flesh, discuss the woes of the world.eat, drink and of course hunt...It is a magic place.....

While sitting on the deck enjoying a beer or ?....this bird came to within 20 feet of us..Turkeys are not considered a game bird here and we dont bother hunting them..American hunters ask me what my preferred weapon is for turkeys, i tell them that if we can be bothered we wait till they roost on the fences at nightfall, then sneak up behind them with a 2x2 fence baton or hedge clippers...we dont waste expensive ammo on turkeys..

This pond is just below our lodge. It is where we train our children the skills of waterfowling. They learn proper gun handling, decoying, calling, camouflaging, dog controlling and obviously how to gut and pluck. The golden rule is (you eat what you shoot),so many a not so palatable roast duck meal has been prepared for us by our aspiring hunters,.Once they have mastered these skills they are allowed to hunt the BIG BOYS pond.they are also then allowed to sleep inside the lodge, until then ,they camp outside in tents. This may sound draconian to some but we dont think so..I vividly remember as a 10 year old having to strip naked, then swim a river in flood to retrieve a wounded bird..It was better to face the river than the wrath of the old man if he ever found out i let an animal suffer..our children have it much easier....

As i was leaving i stopped in to see the local farmer whose property our lodge is on,to thank him...TOM BROUGH is a hunting legend and the unofficial (SHERIFF) of ARIA..He hunts a minimum of 200 days per year and at 71 years of age will still carry out a 200 pond boar..Quite a feat for a young fit man let alone a man in his golden years....TOM uses a Svord pig sticker to despatch his pigs.

The man himself..

Any man who has a scale replica of the boar that nearly killed him in his front garden is a SERIOUS !hunter....This boar had 3 tusks..

Looks like the Garden of Eden, FES.

"Sneak up on them with hedge clippers" ...you are one stealthy ninja.

Great pictures. I am jealous of your cabin. VERY cool...

I think what you are doing with the kids is perfectly fine. It teaches them the basics and allows them to grow. I did however almost die laughing when I read the part about sneakin up on the turkey and smackin it with a 2x2 :D

Great pics of some beautiful country, Fes. There's nothing quite like getting away from the daily grind and spending time with your huntin' buddies in the great outdoors. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks fes - a great story and what a neat cabin - Thanks for the story and pictures, I enjoyed reading your post.

Looks like a great spot! Got any good duck recipes that work in rustic cabin settings?

Sure do!..we brine and smoke the fat ones...the rest are breasted and turned into sausages...simmer brined duck for 20 minutes...drain water then simmer again for 1 hour with shredded cabbage and potatoes...Beautiful!!

Gevonivich you will be fine!...you may be required to retrieve when the dogs get tired tho?...keep your head low and swim straight!..the dogs sleep inside by the fire cos theyve earned their keep... Thanks P and all the rest of you for the comments....heres the view out the back.......FES
