Traditional Time out NZ style...and other ramblings

Fes!...awesome photos and stories!..... man...check out the size of that Boar!!!...what was the story with that...did the Boar catch him?

Yup..that boar killed his best 2 dogs and and opened TOM up as well...up through inside of thigh ,nearly bled him out...The boar in pic is 220 pound...his best is 335.......FES

Wow, imagine that scene... did he manage to stop the Boar? I couldnt imagine coming across one of those guys unequipped!

Well yea he got it alright....thats how come hes got the replica of it..the jaw in the copy is off the real pig...he shot it in the head.......FES

Fantastic pictures of a beautiful country. Good stories too.

I'm off 'hunting' this morning to a junk-sale, might be a few dangerous bores there! ;)

That's an enviable lodge, what a place to retreat to and you've got spring coming along there too!

That bloke Tom you show looks really fit at his time of life, just shows what the outdoors and fresh air can do for you.

Thanks, Will

He sure is fit...has broken many a (hard man) half his age...TOM won the golden shears award here in NZ..he has personally shorn over 1,000.000 sheep in his career...this stuffed his hips but he had a new set installed...you WILL NOT stop this man from hunting....FES....

Fes,
as always, thank you for your report, pictures, and story. Every time I read your threads, I feel that my trip to NZ is getting closer :D
Oh, and about the turkey...I thought you could hypnotize turkeys...hitting them with a baseball bat is a bit of a step down in hunter's finesse...

QUATTRO....i didnt know that it was physically possible to hypnotize an animal that is too stupid to cross a road safely..i look forward to being proven wrong on this point!...heres one i ran over....And trust me when i say that we save our finesse for the more worthy prey.......FES

Are turkeys as stupid as pheasants?! :D When I was going fishing as a boy we'd regularly come across them standing in the road blinking at the car headlights and jump out and wring their necks. An old poacher's trick was to put some corn in the bottom of a paper cone stuck in the ground. The cone has gum round the edge. The bird comes along eats the corn, gets the cone stuck on it's head, and thinking it's dark, falls asleep! :D

I had a Kiwi round at my place yesterday, he trained as a blacksmith over here. Was showing him this wee book I have. It’s from 1956. Can post a few pics if any of you fellers would like to see them.

FES - thanks for the pics and the great story. I really enjoy reading this (and watching the pics). The landscape in NZ is really stunning! If it wouldn´t mean travelling around the whole world, I would have been there already and watched this gem on Earth with my own eyes :)

Hey Fes - have you ever eaten one of those wild turkeys?

They are very tasty!!

Maybe use a log of cherry or apple wood instead of a 2x4, might impart a better flavor. ;P

best

You are a rich man, FES - not (only) in the financial sense but in the more important "life experience" way. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful pictures and stories of your lodge and your country!

Very well said Keith!

Congratulations on recycling those construction materials in such a creative endeavor, Fes. Providing family and friends with such a place in paradise; priceless!!

That's a beautiful lodge and incredible looking area. I hunt for whitetail deer and black bear mostly but have always wanted to try duck hunting. My family has a cabin in the mountains and hunting or not it is always great to get out to such a beautiful, relaxing place.

JACKBLACK....cool pics and interesting observation about the pheasants...our pheasants are extremely cunning and our turkeys are not...hence why you can harvest as many turkeys as you want all year round, but only 2 cock pheasants daily during our 3 month season..I have never seen a pheasant after nightfall and they roost in trees.
MQQN...yes ive eaten them on occasion as a youngster...you only want to eat them in the winter months as in summer they eat the black crickets...and them turks taste like BIG BLACK CRICKETS!!.....We do however use turkey as bait in our (enakis) eel traps.

COYOTE711...Im not a rich man by any means,,but if you lived in NZ and didnt take advantage of its diverse hunting opportunities and beauty,,you would most certainly be a STUPID!! man..

CHARLIE.....Yes agreed and thank you .. FES

....

If you make the effort i will ensure you a great NZ experience...Ive been trying to lure DUNCAN down here (he lives next door)..but hes always toooooooo busy sharpening (bluntening ) his nice knives.........FES

Thanks again, FES! I am sure it would be the experience of a lifetime. Duncan ....get your beautiful wife and tell her its time for a trip to paradise.

Thank you all for your comments......This is what dawn looks like standing on the deck....A coffee in hand with the inevitable hangover, truly beautiful......

FES - the first pic is really great! That landscape is just beautiful (not to say wonderful). I believe that living in NZ is great. Walking in that nature must be a great experience :) (The second pic is not so bad either :p - hunting there seems to be really great fun :) )

That's interesting Fes, I'll put a couple of pics out of that old book shortly. My eldest daughter has been working as a doctor in NZ the past couple of years and seeing a feller there, so maybe I'll even end up with some Kiwi grandkids! :)

Another old pheasant-poaching trick here was to soak raisins in brandy and put a small bristle horizontally through them. I'm sure you can guess the rest.
