I fish from small 12-14 foot aluninum John boats all the time, I have been for the last 10 or so years. I have in the past forgotten to take a life vest, but as of the last year I always keep two in my vehicle. These kids unfortunately got caught in the moment, in my oppinion over loaded the boat, and 3 of them paid the ultimate price. My heart goes out to their family.
It is scary how a beautiful day can turn out to be so horrible.

I am not posting this to hear anyone say that they were irresponsible and made mistakes. They were kids and for the most part I believe most of us have made this same mistake. I am only posting this because I know we can get complacent about activities we do all the time. Maybe we forget a life vest when fishing or forget to secure yourself to the tree stand when hunting, or even buckling your seat belt when driving.

Be safe everyone.

That's not far from me. Overloaded boat, no life jackets, standing in boat a disaster waiting to happen !! Sad story. Just like my posting "Bear Bait".

wow.. what a bummer....:( those boats don't tip that easily... i wonder what really happen...

This happened a few miles South of me and it was indeed a tragedy. My prayers go out to the family's also. Thinking back on my own youth, this senecio could have easily happened to me and my fishing buddies. As we get older and wiser we forget just how vulnerable our youth are, we were also invinceable during those years. "But for the grace of God go I"

I was thinking that also Mike, But when you put 4 guys in a boat like that, it is easy for the boat to tip enough and throw a couple out, and if 1 reaches for another... Dominoes.

The water temp was 49 degrees and their heavy clothes would be like lead weight. Its not easy to swim in that of water without heavy clothes on, add the the cold temp and .........

Gives me and many others cause to pause and give thanks, for there were many times that most of us can point to when it should have happened to me.

That is very sad..one family, man, thats a rough deal. I cant tell you how I survived my youth...luck of the draw really. Sad. Gene

We did not go however as the Sullivan and NYSP divers had it well in hand. We have all been guilty of being young and stupid but....... Anyway, I feel for everyone involved and am sorry for the loss.

OT: I never knew we had so many folks from the Catskill region.

Actually somewhat common with outboards. Guy pull starting it from a standing position, accidently knocks it in gear. Boat goes forward - guy left in coyote/buggs bunny position in mid-air - until he hits the water. Only thing, is instead of being summer it is late fall and the shock of the ice-cold prevents him from getting to the dock.

Something like this finds its way in the paper every Nov up in Northern Ontario. Good news is - the newer four strokes start a hell of a lot easier these days.
