Traiditionals: to pair with modern folder or to not

I've been pairing modern knives with my traditional knives for about a year now, but I'm thinking about just carrying one knife from now on. Do you guys carry both traditional and modern knives at once or just traditional knives?

Two years ago I was all modern tactical folders. I am now 95% traditional and don't carry modern folders. I have kept some modern fixed blades for bug out bags.

So for now my passion is traditionals and fixed neck knives. So I may have a neck knife and a traditional on me most of the time.

Neckers....

Traditional....

The only modern knife I have that sees any EDC time is a CRKT Slip Kiss. I have a CRKT Wave, as well, but don't carry it anymore, since the clip failed.
I generally just EDC a Buck 110 or Uncle Henry LB7 in the belt pouch, along with a canoe, Barlow, or sunfish in my pocket.

I've got a small Hubertus stag leverlock (traditional) and a Spyderco P'kal in my pocket right now. I like to have at least one knife that is good for self defense, which usually is not a traditional (except for my big Puma lockback). I don't use the P'kal for anything but self defense to keep the edge and tip at maximum sharpness so when I carry that, I always have a traditional as well.

Never carry both at the same time. I'm a one knife guy. Usually a modern at work for one handed use, plus I tend to abuse my work knives. Traditionals and saks the rest of the time. Different tools for different jobs.

Both - and sometimes three. I carry a modern, one handed work knife and a traditional slipjoint.

If the traditional has a punch or a crown lifter, then that's it. If it doesn't, then I drop a SAC Pioneer in, as well.
Oh, and I always have a pair of Trim nail clippers and a Leatherman MICRA (mostly for the scissors) in the watch pocket.

Today it's a GEC #77 single sheep in the LFP (in a slip cover), a ZT0562 in the RFP and the SAC in the 'phone pocket' of my shorts. The phone rides in a holster on my belt.

I've always carried just a traditional pocket knife. With a two or three blade jack or stockman, I figure I don't need any other knife. Of late I've been augmenting the pocketknife with a small Leatherman micra or Squirt, for some basic tools.

This sub-forum is for the discussion of traditional knives. This thread is on the line or maybe a little bit over. I'll leave it unless the discussion becomes modern knife dominant. If that happens it moves to General.

Personally I find myself carrying an OHO and a trapper of some flavor on most days. Sometimes the OHO is replaced by a fixed blade. If I only have one knife with me it is always a traditional.

I always have a Vic Manager on my keychain and a trad in my pocket. Why you would pair a trad with a modern? What does one do that the other doesn't?

Eyedog that's a nice Suawnnee pukko(?) you got there. Love his maker's mark.

Not only do I not carry a "modern" knife, I do not own, or want to own, one. I have no desire for designer steels, flavor of the month handles or any of the "Tacticool" stuff. I do carry one or more what Forumites call "Traditionals". To me these are just "pocketknives", a tool to be carried and used on a daily basis. My pocket tool has from 1 to 4 blades, perhaps one of which is a caplifter/screwdriver, folds up neatly and carries easily in a pocket. No pocket slip, no belt sheath.

There is one thread in this sub-forum where you can post an image of a modern knife along with your traditional, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/980449-Traditional-and-Modern-pairings. If you post images in this thread, keep them traditional. No more modern knife images, please. The one that was posted earlier has been moved to the "Traditional and Modern pairings thread". Discussion weighted towards traditional knives is one thing, images of modern knives is a horse of a different color.

Since this the Traditional & Fixed Blade section I am assuming combined fixed blade & traditional are OK? Such as my two photos early in this thread.

I usually carry a tactical folder because of personal preference....and a slipjoint and/or multi-tool since they're more non-knife-people friendly.

Personally, I carry one knife and one multitool most days. The Leatherman Wave has a locking knife blade and a serrated knife blade out of 154CM. I use those for especially difficult cutting tasks like cutting thick zip ties or breaking down a lot of cardboard. Then I have a traditional in my watch pocket for more knifey-cutting tasks like cutting food, opening mail, slicing paper to size, trimming edges on machined plastic, or breaking supports off a 3D printed part.

I don't ever carry 2 knives. And I've basically given up on modern knives. I just listed my last one for sale to fund a custom Lanny's clip.

Absolutely! I love fixed blades too and they are welcome here as long as they don't get too modern looking or ninja like. Not the best definition, I know. We tend to be a little more forgiving when it comes to FB knives. The title is intended to mean, keep the Fixed Blades traditional also.

Yours definately meet the criteria and are some nice looking little knives!

Thanks Peregrin for the clarification...thought that was the case.

I enjoy carrying a few knives on me most times. I like Benchmade and Spyderco for the modern folders, as I have a few of each. On the traditional side of things I usually ALWAYS have a Case trapper or large stockman on me. I truly enjoy both models. I will also have on me most times an old USA made Schrade of some sort. I like the 25OT's, and the 125OT's, and the 8OT's. I guess I like them all. I have several of their scrimshaw models too. Their carbon steel is second to none. It's fantastic. And, I truly enjoy using it.

For real hard work outside in the garden, or around the garage, my Benchmade with cpm-m4 steel gets the nod most times. Fishing, it's my Spydie with H1 steel. Food prep, the big USA Schrades get the honor. Game skinning, and butchering, I like the Schrades, and I have a few nice customs with 1095 steel that holds an exceptional edge which I love using. The only time I use any stainless knives is either fishing, or for going out. I like my carbon blades. They cut what I need to cut exceptionally well.
