I was really impressed with park and it was pretty cool to be in the country Teddy Roosevelt ranched in, but I had places to go. I mapped a route down 2 lane roads, both paved and gravel, as I headed to a place I hadn’t seen in about 46 to 49 years. Along the way I saw some beautiful scenery you can’t see on the freeway, especially old buildings.

I hit some wicked weather and fortunately was at the tail end of it as I drove. I saw more lightning strikes than I could ever imagine, including one that hit an old metal windmill about 300 yards in front of me and maybe 100 yards off the road. It was as if the lightning bolt got stuck to the windmill and couldn’t release itself for what seemed a full second. I wish I had some footage of it because it was impressive. But alas, the Mitchell Corn Palace came into view. I was last here as a kid sometime in the late 70’s.

I spent an hour or so wandering around but never had an opportunity to pull out the City Stock for a photo. But I did find a brochure for an archeological dig nearby I had never heard of before. So I checked that out.

I was able to talk to one of the archeologists working on site for a bit and was amazed at what they had uncovered and how much of the surrounding ground had artifacts just 6 to 10 inches under my feat as I walked across the grass.
My Dad and I used to take road trips from Oregon to Minnesota when I was a kid, and we mostly went the South Dakota route, but a few times we went through North Dakota (the old family farm was just east of Lake Traverse, so either route was pretty much the same distance). It has been a long time since I went through there, and these photos make me want to take my son on a road trip!
Fun fact, did you know that Fargo, ND, is south of Paris, France?
Was the archaeological site Double Ditch by any chance? I've never worked on it, but I know that is one of the more significant old fortified village sites in the Midwest.
Oh, never mind, I just realized that the Corn Palace in in South Dakota. So which archaeological site was it? Was it a buffalo jump site?
I feel like my son would be willing to make the drive just to see that nice old Farmall. I don't really understand why, but he has a profound love for tractors, especially old red Farmalls. The thing that made him saddest when my dad sold the vineyard was that we weren't going to have a tractor anymore.
