What do you pack for snacks on the trail?

I like the popular cheese and deer sausage, peanut butter always seems to make it in my bag. I fill up a film container with it. I love the natural unsalted almonds, and of course a piece of fruit on occasion.

Anyone like cliff bars? I love em. I was cruisin wally world the other day, and found the 5 pack boxes marked down to a dollar a piece!!! A buck for 5 cliff bars is a steal. I bought every one they had. 12 boxes. Peanut butter flavor at that.:thumbup: I threw a couple boxes in my truck, and the rest are in a cabinet. My wife thought I went a little overboard, but damn, when milk is like 4.00 a gallon, Im gonna take advantage of savin some dough when I can.

So, whats your treats????
 
I like those Nature's Valley Peanut Butter bars from Costco...48 bars for about $12 means they're only 25 cents a bar! They make great trail food...
 
I always try to pack a few apples. They are definitely my favourite trail snack - tasty, nutritious, and you can eat them on the move. As an added bonus, if you're with a group or you encounter a few fellow travellers, an offer to share your apple can serve as a great pretense to show off your EDC. :thumbup:

Other than that, I'm also a big fan of trail mix. It keeps well and provides a good energy boost.

On longer hikes, I'll haul some smoked sausage and some old cheddar cheese.

I like to mix up some beef jerky with some smoked almonds and some dried fruit (cranberries, apples, cherries, whatever I've got on hand or sounds good). Sometimes I'll throw in some peanut M & Ms but usually not. Mix it all up in a bag, and its good to go. I've lived on this stuff for a few days at music festivals before.

I also do love some cliff bars. I usually buy the jumbo box at costco, but I wish that I wasnt limited to those three flavors. Sometimes I'll treat myself and buy single bars of the other flavors, but usually I just stick to the bulk pack. My breakfast is often a cliff bar.
 
Clif bars are great and that was a killer deal. I'd have cleaned off the shelves as well.

I make my own trail mix. I buy a bag of M&Ms, nuts, apple chips, a few types of dehydrated fruit, sunflower seeds, raisins, etc. and mix them in a ziploc. When I'm finished I have a huge amount of mix for about the price of 3 or 4 of those small pre-packaged bags.
 
The date on them is Jan 17th, so they were getting ready to go out, but Ive found them to go waaaay beyond the best by date just fine. After all, they are sealed!! 12.00 for 60 cliff bars was too good to pass on.
 
For me it's often those all butter shortbread, goes great with my tea !!!!
 
My trail endulgence is those snack size Snicker bars. Packed full of energy, go down quickly, satisfy my hunger, and of course tasty!

Other than that, I eat pretty normally on the trail. Of course, environment does control it somewhat. I have had the mayo and cheese on a sandwich go bad in a couple of hours in the desert.
 
In this season, grilled or smoked meat with ampan (bread stuffed with adzuki-jam), chocolate.
Salty meat among carbon-hydrate foods are good I think.
 
Snow on the tops of the mountains in the kita district, Fujita-san! Looks really pretty from the veranda!

This is my favorite Winter snack food... I make it up myself and package it in cling wrap for the trail. Start with a small jar of chunky peanut butter, add 1/2 cup of crushed almonds, a cup (or more!) of chocolate bits, a full stick of softened salted butter, a cup of powdered sugar, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract. Mix all together into a soft dough, roll out into a 1" thick layer and cut up into manageable bars, wrap each bar individually, and stick into the fridge overnight to harden up. For summer time I add a cup of flour to this to make it stick together better in warmer weather.

P.S. This is NOT diet food... Winter hiking uses up a lot of calories and this helps keep up with the demand.

stchawl san, I've also seen mountain top and valleys white just around this noon.
BTW your snack sounds so nice especially in winter.

Hot chili things are also good in winter.
 
I like dried fruit, certain granola bars, peppered jerky and I always keep a bag of trail mix containing raisens, mixed nuts and M & M 's!)
 
Deer jerky or some sort of granola mix or granola bar. Clif bars are okay, but I haven't had any of those in quite a while.
 
GORP straight Good Old Raisin and Peanuts...my fav... but i do throw in a few m&m or dried fruits in it now and then
 
I love the rare and elusive Blueberry Crisp Clif Bar! Rare as hen's teeth, around here anyway. 8-)

I like the Black Cherry Almond, never tried the Chocolate Chip or the Peanut Butter ones though.

I like GORP and as far as nuts are concerned, peanuts, almonds, pistachios, Brazil, Filberts, walnuts, cashews, it don't matter! They're all great.

Raw Honey and peanut butter sammiches are something to behold and if you don't have bread - no problem! I really, really love Raw Honey though...great stuff.

That's why I started that food dehydrator thread, I want to get me one. Make jerky, beat and grind some of it to dust and make traditional pemmican with tallow, make modern day versions of it with and without tallow. Non-traditional types with either honey or peanut butter as a binder without tallow and adding dried blueberries, strawberries and nuts and other ground up pieces of nature's goodness. 8-)
 
i love salami and cheese while out hiking... we also eat a lot of fruit, jerky, pb&j's, trail mix and energy bars...:D
