Finally making the switch over.......going to go with a gas forge (for now). Getting the NC knifemaker's forge, 2 burner. I KNOW I KNOW i would be more than happy and contented to build my own, but no access to tools and I actually have the cash. I know full well the limits of the NC forges as well, :jerkit:, I have used them before so I know the possibilites/performance. Been a long time since I have used gas, I am a die hard coal guy too. Look forward to it though, go in shop, turn on gas and light, have a smoke and forge. End of the day, turn off the gas and washup :D, no smoke or dust or black boogers  . Am I a traitor to all that is black and shiny?!?!?

Welcome to the world of GAS. I used coal (at my teachers pleasure) for a few years.Like you said no black dust or boogers. I have used coal and coke off and on due to availability at classes but I would not use it for long term. But then I have never been a purist. Good Luck and most of all have fun!!

Welcome to the dark side Sam. I used to be a charcoal purest  but now I see the benefits of different forges; I am installing 1 coal, 2 waste oil/propane, and 2 charcoal forges in my new shop.

Be proud to be a traitor rather than a closed minded vegetable. :D;):p

not a traitor, imo, just moving along with technology. i know a mostly "retired" maker, who only ever used metallurgical grade coke, to forge blades with, and recently i built him at his request a gas forge, and he loves it. no more building a big wood fire and coking it up, just to HT a few blades, or weld up a billet. he actually loves the thing , he's 63 and it took some convincing , but finally come to his senses that gas was simply more efficient, and cleaner. IMO

I only used a coal forge for a few blades and now that forge is a plant holder. I too bought a factory forge and like it alot. Its a mankel but the NC is just as good IMO.
Good move, dont feel guilty.

oh boy first the Parks, now the propane...What have I done!!
now you have to make the transition to waste oil forge;) Save money on fuel to buy ceramic belts.
I welded up some cable in the veggie forge last week

Joe you created a monster:eek:!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll move to oil when I can build my own, that thing is crazy, SICK amounts of heat So I wanna make a big one.

Bruce, that part was a bit tongue in cheek I feel ecstatic about getting a gas forge! I look forward to the even heat, childlike control of the atmosphere and temperature, and overall ease of use. I look forward to heat treating long blades too :D.

What Sam is not telling you is that they have begun extensive drilling for natural gas in our county !!! He must have found a good hole in Yulan .

i know the basic premise of what a purist may be-but can anyone define a purist and what he does or doesnt do. i never realized i was a traitor--mark

I like my NC forge. It is my general use forge. I also got a swing arm mount for it, which make positioning the forge just right really easy. You could weld one up for almost nothing.

Sam i have had the knifemaker for the last 11 years and it works great for what i need.
The doors on both ends are handy and mine has no problem reaching welding temps.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. Good to hear some testimonials from you guys that have this forge, thanks very much! Stacy, i'll definately make one of those up, good tip thanks.

Mark, the purist thing was a joke, against the using of a modern (not 1,000 years old modern) forge as opposed to the traditional fuels of coal or coke or charcoal, nobody here is that uptight :D. You are no traitor, trust me. :D

AND ROBERT, SHUSH!!!! I don't want them drilling in my backyard!!!!! :)

Love my gas forge. Next month getting the pipe for my vertical (Large) waste oil forge.
Also some old anchor chain if they have any. It's a great salvage yard at the beach that dismantles ships.
