I’ve had this machete for about a year now and haven’t done anything with it other than replace the wire wrap with handmade buriti palm cordage.

Today I cut it down into a Golok.

I’ve been wanting a Martindale #2 for a long time but they aren’t available here in Brazil. This one fills the gap nicely. I need to make up a leather sheath for it now. I’m happy with the way it turned out. Mac

That looks like a great mod, I like the golok shape better. Seems that the upswept design isn't necesarry for general machete duties anyway.

Looks great! Did you soak the palm fiber in some sort of resin to keep it in place?

CWL,

No, I haven't yet but I might. It's just held on with pressure, it's plenty tight. The wrap was an experiement. My original plan was to make black horn inlays and that remains in the works. Mac

Mac,
I did the same cut on an 18" Ontario several years back. Then did the Jerry Hossom convex treatment. Sure made a nice blade out of just a hum drum machete!!
I have a martindale that I convexed as well back at that same time, e-mail me if ya wanna work out me sending it to ya.

"Any word on the leather sheaths you are gonna bring back?"

I have been buying sheaths. I'm currently working on a bulk buy but my "guy" is having a hard time getting ahold of his distrubtor. I have alot going on with this to get ready for this one year, international move so I don't want to get into taking orders. I'm keeping my eyes open.

Convexing a blade can be done with hand tools. I clamp my blades down to the edge of my workbench and do the rough work with a mill file then use sandpaper wrapped around the file to smooth it all out. It doesn't come out like the Hossom blades I've seen photos of but I am satisfied with the way they perform. Mac

Somebody post some instructions on convexing a Tram. Can it be done with hand tools?

Use a good file. Clamp the machete and file from the spine toward the edge, to avoid unpleasant accidents.

BTW, Nice mod. Sort of reminds me of that Rambo knife. The bolo seems well suited to this kind of treatment.

I found some old pics of a bunch of different blades I convexed in the learning process and a pic of the martinale. if ya are interested in it Mac just let me know.
sorry the pics are not better!

Sweet thanks for the info on convexing machetes. I got my Trams last week and have been looking for a way to put a better edge on them. It looks like I'll be heading down to Costa Rica so I'll see if I can grab one while I'm down there. How is your survival school going? Those Central Highlands look pretty wild.

Looks good Pict. I'm still deciding if I want to do that to one of my cheap machetes. Did you notice a large difference in the balance or was it negligible?

For convexing a blade I use a wall sander. It has a mouse pad-like soft base and clamps to hold sandpaper. You can pick one up at a hardware store for a few dollars.
