trangia

Never heard that, and everyone I know who uses trangias on "expedition" with camps and schools (so sets that are a decade and older) have never mentioned it. I'll ask around and see if anyone has had that happen. Not saying it couldn't happen, you could very well be right.

Here's the video from Hiram who used to a lot extensive testing on alcohol stoves - I think you have to be using a lot to get this sort of damage tho:

I didn't catch the whole vid, just saw the damage, so maybe he comes to this conclusion. My guess is that once there is no longer any alcohol in the burner, the temp would spike, since the evaporating alcohol is no longer providing cooling. This makes sense now, hadn't thought of that. it could be that some burners are more prone to it, differing hardness of the brass.

Something to keep in mind, I'll ask some other guys if they have come across it.

Well I can't speak to the Trangia but I have made several aluminum soda can stoves that I have "run dry" and I've never had any issues with cracking. I have had it where the JB Weld flaked off at the top/body join though...

kinda on topic... the food in my car's 72 hour remain overnight kit is pretty dependent on a supply of hot water... I obtained a pair of new old stock Swiss Ranger twig stoves, and decided to modify them for use with the Trangia... opened up the twig fill hole so the alcohol stove could be inserted, and the snuffer ring applied from the outside... I later further opened up the hole to fit a Sterno fuel can as it is more convenient to store than a bottle of methanol... if I had to do over, would find the smaller diameter Sterno cans, and lower into the stove with bent wire to keep a better wind screen...the Trangia is considerably hotter than the Sterno... the 1/2 liter cup has tapered sides, and heats fairly quickly

Just wanted to update this one, talked to some guys at work while cleaning about 20 of the 50 trangia sets used for the week, and no one had ever come across cracking in the burner that was not cased by anything other than a drop or similar mechanical damage. Also the general consensus was that short of a bullet hole, the burner would still work, and be safe to use. it just might act funny with the simmer ring on.
