I really like the translucent green scales that are available on some knives. I though about getting someone to make a custom set for my Paramilitary 2 but then had an idea.
I had an extra set of digicam scales laying around from one of my earlier mods that I wasn't using. I like digicam but did not like this particular set, one side had mostly blacks and dark greens and the other side was mostly tan so they didn't match well. I've read from various posts that the pattern was actually on a thin piece of fabric close to the top of the scales and that the rest of the scales were made of the translucent green G10 material.
So I decided to see if I could sand that fabric layer off my digicam scales turning them into translucent green.
It took a while to do, 15 minutes per side or so sanding carefully by hand with 60 grit paper over a piece of lapping glass. I checked my progress often and kept them wet to contain the dust. As soon as I got through the fabric layer I stopped with the 60 and then did a quick progression up to 600, alternating the scratch patterns. I finished them off with some Fltiz and then some WD40 and hand buffing.
I had to re-do the countersinks since the screws were sticking out but once I did that, I was able to use the stock screws fine. I did have to sand down the lanyard tube so that it was flush. I also had to radius the edges a bit to round them off again.
On the blade, I lightly rounded off the spine and put a nice bevel on it with my Wicked Edge.
The result I think looks really good. The overall knife is definitely thinner now since I had to remove some G10 but it looks like it will hold up fine. I really like the look, this color would make an awesome sprint!
