Trapper EDC options

You could also try a buckaroo pouch. It is basically a pouch that hangs from your belt and dangles in your pocket. It keeps the knife upright and you can just use the lanyard to pull it out of your pocket.

Check out leather pocket organizers, there are a ton, have a pocket for a knife, lots are flat, just cards and cash, all kinds of folders too. Or even two pocket organizer-you can always throw a light or small pen on the other side.
Thanks, Neal

Pocket sheaths give you some options too. And work well in a coat pocket.
Thanks, Neal

I carry most all medium to large knives in my back right pocket vertically alongside my wallet. You never notice the knife is there and it's easy to get to. Because the knife is to the outside of the back pocket you also don't sit on the knife, so you don't have to worry about that.

The modded pocket is a great idea to carry large folders. Since I don't sew either, I placed a small safety pin in all my jeans right front pockets. I located the pin in the same position as one would sew a seam. I can't feel the pin yet it forms the same division of the pocket as a seam would and comfortably holds my knives (large or small) vertically in my pocket.
James, I like this idea :cool:, but I'm having trouble visualizing the placement of the safety pin. Any chance you could post a picture? Thanks! :)

I have found that a leather slip will help to keep a larger knife vertical in a back pocket. I think a suede slip would probably excel at that. I've really never been able to get comfortable with something the size of a trapper, though (although there's a Case CV trapper that I've been admiring and I may have to break down...). I'm fine with anything up to a medium stockman in a front pocket.

Place the safety pin in the same place as the sewer up pocket above.

I carried my Case full size trapper in my back pocket along side my wallet for years. Then I got a new larger wallet and the knife wouldn't fit. I now carry it in a belt sheath. For a while there I kept reaching in my back pocket for that knife.

Thanks deltaboy, you are exactly right. Use safety pins instead of thread. Place about 1 1/4 " from pocket edge.
Two pins make a deeper pocket.

Insert pins so they are between the pocket and jean material. (not against leg)

Use one pin for smaller knives.

Hope this helps GT.

Thanks, James; perfectly clear now!:cool::cool:
I was hung up on the idea of a single safety pin being sufficient, even with delta boy's helpful explanation, but more pins for larger knives and deeper pocket makes sense. (I might even experiment with a horizontal pin to "raise" the knife-holding area higher in the jeans pocket instead of carrying the knife all the way down to bottom of jeans pocket.)

Good idea GT. I think it could work giving easier access especially to smaller blades. If you do give it a try let us know how it works out. Have a great day my friend.

Great photo to illustrate the solution. I do the same, but on the other side along the seam. I figured the pocket is more rigid at that side, not sure if it really makes a difference though. Also the knife disappears against the seam.

What Mark suggests is the first position that came to my mind, too. I always have a Minichamp and another SAK hanging by a little suspension clip from the back edge of my LFP, and never even notice them there. I'd guess setting up the little knife compartment inside the pocket on the "outboard edge" of the pocket would be similar. (Plus you'd avoid any awkward questions that might come from the compartment on the "inboard edge" of the pocket:"Have you sewn a little knife pouch into your front pocket, or are you just glad to see me?").

I have done the "next to the wallet" trick in my back pocket too, and it worked pretty well. It just doesn't feel as secure though so I went back to front pocket carry.

I just got used to having a large knife in my front pocket. I carried a Leatherman Wave in my pocket for years, then a 110 clone, then just a Case Texas Jack in the watch pocket for a while, then back to the 110, a real one this time. This is in pants ranging from Carhartt work pants to cowboy cut Wanglers to relaxed fit jeans.
