Travel Knives

...You'd hate to have to cut your own leg or arm off with a multi tool, with a dull blade!

Rules For Camping:

1. Leave visited areas in equal or better condition than you find them
2. Do not affect the wildlife
3. Do not cut off your own arms and legs with a dull blade

I would pack an Opinel.
The first time I ever saw an Opinel was on a 21-day desert survival course near Escalante. Guess who had an Opinel? The instructor.

If possible I recommend 2 separate trips to southern Utah.

You can make a loop in the southwest and see north rim of Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Dam at Lake Powell, Zion, Bryce, Grand Staircase/Escalante, Capitol Reef, Natural Bridges. This is plenty to see in one week.

You couldn't see all of that in a lifetime.

For car type travel out of town I prefer to have an Emerson folder pocket clipped and/or a Buck CSAR Liason fixed OR my original DPx HEST fixed blade by Rowen, either rigged for horizontal belt carry. I find all three do well with the "unexpecteds" of travel, they travel well (i.e. comfortable and still easily accessed during long-haul sitting) and the HEST and Emersons do well in the woods. If concealment is going to be a factor I go with the Buck over the HEST.

For your budget though, and with flying involved, the setup you describe is as good as anything else...it will be as good a combination as anything in that price range. 50/50 it'll be stolen from your luggage anyway...
