Traveling bladeless

I haven't flown in years. When we go to Florida, we drive. Now I'm going to be flying to Atlanta for the Blade Show, and I won't have a knife with me. This may be the airlines last chance to make a happy passenger out of me, and somehow I don't think they will succeed.

Perceptions of poor customer service preceded 9/11 and I haven't heard any reason to believe that the airlines generally are hoping to reverse those perceptions.

F****** bast*** terrorists and shortsighted liberal-ass politicians have only made us more vulnerable to attacks since there are no more law-abiding passengers carrying knives.:(

Good Evening Everyone-

Gollnick, you are very detail-oriented. That is some great advice you've given to our fellow Forumite. Years ago, I had a Spyderco Delica stolen from my room on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship by their staff. If I knew then what I know now, my plan-of-action would be almost EXACTLY as you've described. Thank goodness that lesson only cost me a few bucks for a cheap zytel-handled knife. Great feedback and information!

JohnG, you mentioned this:
Most airports have USPS boxes handy, as far as I see.

After the nightmare of September 11th, many mailboxes have been removed...and I'm not talking just at airports. Mailboxes serve as a dandy hiding spot for bombs from terrorist scumb@gs. You won't see mailboxes at airports, train stations, transportation hubs, busy intersections, shopping districts, or anyplace else there might be a few unlucky victims.

You would likely need to hand the now-sealed envelope to an airport employee and ask them to place it in the mail for you. Get the name of the airport employee because it could become a FEDERAL issue if a knife was stolen from the mail system. That part is actually good news.

As a side note, you'll also notice that sturdy metal garbage cans have been removed for the same reason as the mailboxes.

It's good standard operating procedure to have a self-addressed, stamped envelope with you whenever you are traveling away from home. You'll never know what you may encounter that would be better mailed than personally delivered.

This is an interesting thread.

Regards,

I don't have to fly often as I usually drive when I cover my sales territory (southwest US) but a few times a year I have to go to a trade show or rep training and am forced to deal with today's version of air travel. I have to leave this Wed morning for a trip to one of the factories my company represents and will have to rise at 4:30 AM to make sure I make my 8:00 AM departure from LAX (I live 40 minutes from the airport). I could leave my pocket knife home and sleep for at least another 45 minutes by using a carry on bag, but I've carried a pocketknife since I was about 8. I'll have to leave the Leatherman WAVE that resides in my laptop case and nail clippers home as well. I'll also be leaving the Sebenza and Socom at home in the safe and traveling with the old CS small Voyager in case it disapears from my check bag mysteriously.

Is it still OK to take a damn flashlight? Will I be harrassed if I have a Surefire in my carry on bag instead of the old MiniMag because the Surefire's a "tactical light"?

Grumble, grumble...

well everytime i have travelled by air since 9-11 i have had my streamlight scorpion on me and so far i've been ok. also i did have my sak classic on me when flying out of IAD in dec because i forgot it was in my carry-on, oops, oh well no-one found it - so who feels safer knowing that?

at the security archway there is usually a bowl or container to put your keys and pocket change in as you go through the arch, well if you had a utilikey on your keyring im pretty sure no-one would notice it. not only do they pay NO attention to your keys, no-one looked IN my wallet when that went in the bowl, which made me wonder why i bothered taking out the half hacksaw blade i usually have in there.

"Do you still travel by air as much as before, or do you try to travel by other means if you can?"

I try to travel by other means - my car. I have deliberately stopped flying when I can reasonably drive (16 hours or less).

I still have to fly when I go to the left coast or over the oceans. I've got a trip to Germany and one to Japan that I am not looking forward to (the airplane part - not the destination).

My main reasons are because of the airport hassle, no-knife in the plane, long lines, etc.

When I drive, I get to flick all the way :)

I'm going to turn this particular bit into a separate discussion. I carry a silver UtiliKey on my keyring. I also carry a Gerber MicroLight LST in the change compartment of my wallet.

How about you guys traveling with knives to sell at blade shows?
How do you transport blades in checked luggage without being
stolen?

Mike

I used to lock my checked luggage with nylon tiewraps and use the scissors on my Leatherman Micra to cut them off at my destination. Now I can't take the Micra except in checked luggage. So it is back to the small locks that every thief is ready to open with their key.

Anyway, I'm DRIVING to the blade show (from Virginia) so I all I have to do is check the knife laws in NC and SC.

Why not get some combination locks? The ones I have for my luggage are actually a bit sturdier than the key ones I've had in the past.

:D My wife and I are driving down to Atlanta, too. Probably pass you on the road.:D

For that matter, I can't see the point in flying anywhere between New York and Florida. When you figure the time you're going to spend at the airport (which, if you're flying out of Roanoke, almost always includes changing planes somewhere), not to mention getting from the airport to your hotel, it's faster and easier to just drive.

combination locks
Great idea, thanks!

I can't see the point in flying anywhere between New York and Florida.
Over the last couple of years I've driven to Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando (Disney), Sarasota, New York City (Manhattan, yipes!), and as far north as Ottawa, Canada.

We bought a highway cruising car to extend our range and comfort on road trips (Ford Crown Victoria LX/HPP). This is money we're not spending with the unreliable and uncooperative airlines .

I hope you have a safe trip and a great time at the Blade Show. :)

I travel by air every week lately. Since 9/11, I've been checking one piece of luggage, and locking an Endura and Leatherman Juice in it. (both relatively cheap) - (I've actually gotten used to not having to schlep 2 bags all over the airport and rummage for overhead space if you are not first to board)

On board, I've got a Surefire E2, and a key chain with a paracord lanyard that is relatively long - Those would have to suffice on board if it came down to it.

This is probably inconsistent, from airport to airport or guard to guard, I just picked up a friend at the terminal this week and they checked my wallet, maybe becuase it looked fat. (lots of receipts, no knife)
