Traveling knives? (Slipjoints)

when i saw half dome reminded me when girl & i was camping in tuolwuee meadows in eastern yosemite.we woke up in the tent & HEARD A LOUD NOISE JUST OUTSIDE the tent she said" what is that " i said it's a bear eating our bacon & we are going to let him go ahead.regardless of laws i always packed a 357 mag.on all outings.only one chance in 10,ooo of serious bear trouble; however human trouble is a more definite possibility.a good deterrent while traveling is a portable [foldup] corkscrew.everyone in europe drinks wine & would'nt give it a 2nd look.makes a formamible push dagger .happy trails.

I know I've discussed this in the Wilderness Forum but in 1975 I took my cousin on her first camping trip to Yosemite. The first night out a bear came into our campsite and while foraging around by our packs (our food was suspended between some trees) actually came over and put his paw on my shoulder. (We were sleeping in blanket rolls under the stars.)

Needless to say it was an attention getter.

First of many bear encounters over the years, none of which ended badly for me or my parties. (Though I've been around two that didn't end happily.)

And now back to regular programming...

 All the years I've camped and hunted I've never seen a Bear. Except when we were in Alaska

Not to promote thread drift, but,
Damn! now that is a bear encounter Blues!

and i though I'd been close to a bear... (about 20feet on an ATV that i was turning around reeeal fast)

I'm going to have to agree with most others on this topic and vote for a Swiss Army Knife as the prefered travel knife. A SAK is instantly recognizable almost everywhere as a nifty pocket tool and not so much as a weapon. Because of it's small size and non-locking blade it is legal almost everywhere.

Although they are sold in many many locations, I am going to disagree with the "easily replaced" comments because it is very easy to get sentimentally attached to a SAK. It's less than 20 bucks but I would be very upset if I lost my red Vic Spartan.

The SAK is excellent and functional/well made but it lacks what in the 18th century would've been called 'bottom':D

I no longer travel on planes, I hate them too much so I go by car &ship which makes knife carrying somewhat easier. The old fashioned slipjoint or pocket-knife is indeed an ideal travelling mate and I've even found that strangers have approved or asked about my knives. You need stag or bone to travel with, that's all:thumbup:

SAK + Case Stock / Peanut what else would you need? MacGyver handled anything with SAK, imagine if he would have also a Case knife...

I always travel with both my SAK for places like the UK and my trusty old Puma Stockman for everywhere else. As yet I have never needed more.

The 3 1/2" Stockman is very sheeple friendly and with 3 blades in 3 different sizes to choose from it goes ages before needing sharpening.

If I lost them I would be upset but I offset this by knowing I have a good trusty blade with me....

If I had to choose one new edc travel knife I would probably choose a Case Peanut with Yellow Derlin handles and stainless blades.Perfect for all countries and all conditions......

It seems that bear sightings are a pretty common occurrence at Yosemite. I saw one also several years back when I went camping with my large extended family. As we were gathered around the fire one night one of my younger cousins pointed at my uncle and said "bear!" The rest of us thought they were talking about him since my Uncle is not a thin man. It took a few seconds to register, but we soon realized that my cousins were referring to a real bear, who was right next to my uncle. The bear left soon after, I guess he didn't care much for the high-pitched screams of my aunts and cousins. Needless to say that was the most exciting moment of that trip.

I will be employing the brown sharpie skidmark on underwear for my checked bags. You never know while traveling that you may find a "must buy now" opportunity. Such as finding USA Schrade Old Timers New in Box mixed with Chinese Schrade in the display case of a mom and pop style hardware store. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I for some reason had to check 4 knives and a leatherman from my latest trip. I got issues, I am aware of that.

I'd probably take a SAK with me if I was traveling outside the U.S. so as not to run afoul of any laws. However, if I'm within the U.S. (& especially if I decide to bring my handgun), I'd probably bring along a "decent", but not a valuable slippie as well as a med. size folder (Probably a Delica, FWIW).

I'd probably stick with a slippie that has a max of a 2.5" blade, just in case & my "other" folder if the local knife laws aren't an issue.

When I was backpacking in the Smokies (Elliott's backyard), I saw lots of bears.
The leantos had wire fences against them.

And now back to regular programming...

But I never saw any travellers with a Bear (MGC) trapper

Travelling in urban areas I think a SAK is hard to beat. BUT booring. I like to have tools I like so I also bring a knife I like, but not the most walued ones. If I fly I put them rolled in a sock or in the toiletbag.
I never travel to the nature as my average life gives what I want in that area but if I did I would bring a mediumsised scandi fixedblade like one of my vintage moraknifes.
