Traveling knives

I spend most of the year on the road. So I bring an apache case loaded with knives and sharpener stuff. My hapstone fits on the bottom and the pic I'll add fits on top. What knives I bring is always changing depending on what I want n what's legal. If I'm flying I'll put as many options under 100 as possible. I have a couple of beaters in a tote for this so the case is for nice stuff. I'm thinking even if it's legal and tsa takes it you won't get it back. They go in a bag labeled knives in checked luggage.20230308_051228.jpg

Interesting question, that I don't have a universal answer to.

I've taken to carry this Swiss Champ a lot, it's relatively inexpensive, easy to replace if lost, draws little-to-no attention, and has a lot of stuff I might potentially need.

If I travel for business meetings / conferences, I tend to have a Spyderco T-Mag (second from the bottom up), as it looks somewhat classy and non-threatening, works with most jurisdictions I travel to, and has no lock besides the puny magnet

If I travel to the seaside, I more often than not have a Salt on me

And finally, on top of everything else :D , I prefer having my beaters Ultratech and Combat Troodon tagging along wheverver I go

I like that case at the bottom with the Microtechs. Did you buy that or make it yourself?

I just don’t bring a knife with me when I travel by air. I will forget that I have it in my pocket while going through TSA and will lose it.

We just did a 2 week trip to DC, NC and St Augustine, FL. Camping part of it and staying in hotels some too. I brought one knife to have sort of a one knife challenge. There was a multitool in my kit bag as well but I didn’t use the blade. A BM Bailout in M4 served me well. It was still passably sharp at the end and didn’t break any omega springs.

Most of my business meetings involved drinking coffee to excess. (If there is such a thing!)
During those times: the knife was generally relegated to the chore of venting coffee cup lids properly.
A CRK Mnandi, Benchmade Valet, or WE Vapor was always more than sufficient!IMG_29012022_152514.jpg

My old Eze Lap sharpener, an SAK, EnZo 70, and a med Stockman. The EnZo stays in the room and comes in handy for left overs or to cut up snacks.

I usually take my SAK tinker in the pocket when traveling, and my Leatherman wave in my suitcase just in case I need a little something extra. A few years ago while traveling cross country to Wyoming I decided to take my Buck Stockman instead of the Tinker though. I guess it can change depending upon the circumstances of the trip, but 90% of the time it is the SAK

Stock Victorinox silver Alox Pioneer and a Leatherman Squirt is what I have taken on prior business trips when flying, in checked luggage. Gives me a small set of tools, and not a major setback if lost or stolen.

If camping (Road trip) whatever I decide to take, parang, axe, folding saw etc... Otherwise a SAK tinker or if using my Landrover a Leatherman surge!

My EDC is a Leatherman Wave. . . .so I C it on ED it is possible to do so. Checked luggage when necessary.

There is a Hen and Rooster pen look alike that is my stealth knife. Always in a carry-on jumbled in with toiletries by "mistake". It has not been challenged to date. It does not look "tactical" and its inexpensive enough for me to walk away from without drama.

I haven’t flown in years so my trips are strictly road trips. I usually carry a jumbo stockman and pair it with a Buck 110 OR a modern pocket clip knife. Usually a Benchmade 551. I also like to carry either a Leatherman tool or an older US made Gerber tool in my backpack. I use an old Woodland camo ALICE pack for trips after I removed its aluminum pack frame. Whether I stay at a cabin in the hills or a 5 star hotel I use the same backpack, much to the dismay of my fancy fiancée. I also like to carry a stout fixed blade and leave it in the car just for emergencies but I don’t always take it as it’s probably overkill. I do always take a couple diamond stones in my shaving kit for sharpening away from home. She never understands why I take more than one knife much less the stones.

Shocking the Fiancee with that backpack may be a fun thing to do . . .but being "quirky" that way is only cute for a little while.

From my vantage point of forty eight years of committed heterosexual monogamy, I would recommend that, for trips together, you start by getting a less tactical looking backpack. Little used modern looking backpacks may be found on e-Bay all day long. Same for the Goodwill online shopping website.

Why start off a relationship with friction? There will be plenty of friction rerdless as tie goes by. When traveling wih your intended to "nice" places . . .go with a backpack that doesn't make people think she with a wanna-be militia member?

I'm 48 years in . . .I'm just sayen . . . .

Re travel by car . . .

With the above remarks out there . . .The trunk of our car has a folding shovel, machete alongh with other things packed away with the spare. Having some sort of prepper bag in the trunk is not as bad idea . . .just don't use it to irritate your lady.

It depends on what I will be doing, if I have to fly or not, if I ride my own vehicle or not...

For instances where I the knife might get lost, stolen, beaten or confiscated... I carry something like a Spyderco Delica or Endura, and, of course, a SAK or Leatherman.

When I lived for 9 months in Cairo (work trip), I carried a ziptie-waved Endura and a SAK OHT. Easily replaceble and readily available.
