traveling with your knife

If I live in Boston, and I'm visiting relatives over in California, would it be ok to bring my folding knife with me?

That depends on the knife and on how you plan to transport it. California generally seems to have more relaxed laws on carrying than Boston does, but local municipal regulations may restrict that. You should check the laws of the locale you'll be visiting.

I mean like when carrying it on a plane, would they bust you for checking it in your luggage?
