TRC Knives Post Apocalyptic Finish Experience & Thoughts

Not a big fan of the finish but I Don't h8te it and as my dad always said Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Exceptionally beautiful knives you got there. I wouldn’t worry about all the old men in this thread that don’t like it. Old men can’t change. Truly one of the best knife makers in the business right now. Enjoy them.

People like what they like but I find those knives pointless from a design pov and hideously finished.

I am sad to say, but there are some serious problems with this "Apocalypse" finish from TRC.

My interest in TRC started when I saw someone post a photo of the Apocalypse model with the "Apocalypse" finish, and it looked similar to the one G GIBI posted earlier in this thread - a kind of translucent effect from a blueing at the edge and yellowing at the spine. I loved the aesthetic and immediately started watching all the retailers for the next Apocalypse drop.

When I finally got one, I was really disappointed to find the blade given an almost "cartoon" quality with bright yellow brush strokes over top of a plain brown blade. Nothing about it seems like natural patina, it looks like an accident from a kid with a paint brush.

BUT this model does have a great shape, weight, and overall ergonomics and I already waited months for this thing, so I decided to keep it and see if the finish looks less corny with some actual wear. Carried it around and used for some light tasks for a few weeks, and am now noticing TONS of rust on the knife - far more than I would have expected from Elmax after such a brief period of time.

Therefore I think the concerns others have raised regarding this finish and increasing susceptibility to rust, they are 100% valid and I think everyone should be aware of this when considering a TRC with this finish.

In the end, I wish I had just picked the "boring" stonewash version when I had the chance, instead of wasting $600 to chase after a photo I saw on social media. 😞

Most of us have been burned by pretty things at some point in our lives. Live and learn, and thank you for posting your assessment. Might save the next guy some $$$.

I am going to have to eat my words on my previous statements about TRC's apocalyptic finish...

More to come.

edit: I blame Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery for this

The pictures look like ones from a thread titled “help! How to remove spots on knife after use?”

Or from those sad guys living down south who have the Nasty Sweats all over their blades..... Maybe they could call the next version "Swamp Ass"

This truly is a thing. That’s why satin and bead blast finishes suck, but it seems like 90% of makers use them.

Satin and bead blast rust in my pocket in just a couple of hours at work during the summer. Even stainless steels.

I much prefer polishes or coated blades.

One of my favorite EDC fixed blade. Has been well used, sharpened, put through tasks I don’t want prettier knives doing. Hand it to my wife when she’s gardening or when someone asks to borrow a knife and you don’t know how they operate haha.

I’d say the apo finish holds up quite well and adds to the character of the finish. Bad lighting today but tried to take the “most used” looking angles.

Has anyone found a way to remove the Apocalyptic finish? I picked up a south pole on trade and it's an incredible knife. In the last year i've taken it all over the world, including it's namesake, Antarctica.

I can't belive how fast this knife rusts. I don't put any oil or such on my knifes. I have quite a few elmax blades and have never had to before. It's awful. I love this knife, and it's incredibly useful for all sorts of tasks, but i can't get over the rusting.

Sorry , but buying stuff brand new , that only looks like it's been thru Hell and back , is what we used to call "posing" . IMO

If you buy something new , and wear it and tear it yourself , even if careful used and well maintained , that's the real deal . Respect !

You can't buy experience off the shelf . Got to live it !

Ironically , most people that have actually been thru the rough and rocky , value the brand new and shiny . ☺️

You may wish to check in the "Maintenance / Tinkering / Embellishment area for solutions to your specific issue, or whether you'll just have to live with it and keep it maintained with any of several different products to fight further oxidation.
