Anyone use one for general forging for breaking down stock and or making pattern welded steel. I really like to forge and would like to try damascus but thinking about all those draw outs and restacks does not seem appealing. I am talking about something that is sold at riverside machine?

Thanks

John

I've been using the Riversige treadle hammer for about 5 years.
It's definately a step up from doing everything with a hand held
hammer, but should not be considered a full substitute for a
power hammer or hydraulic press.

Mine does allow me to forge down some larger stock, and do
pattern welding. It also allows more power and precision
than with only a hand held hammer.

Due to the need to reheat more often, there will be more
material loss with a treadle hammer when pattern welding..
...perhaps 50-60% compared to perhaps 10% with a press
or power hammer(depending on layer count/pattern).

I made two modifications on mine, which made things easier...
The first.....a simple...old fashioned screen door spring around
the head and wedge to keep the wedge from coming out in
use.
The second mod was a 5/8" bolt through the head from the front
(with a wood grip) to use as a handle to assist in pilling the head
down.
