Treated myself to a new axe

i got some $ in a few early christmas cards, so i decided to treat myself to a new axe. i walked down to the hardware store and picked through the Snow and Nealley selection (they have a couple of almost every model). i found a 3.5 pound one with a 30" handle that i liked. the head was symetrical, evently ground and the eye appeared to be straight. the handle grain was decent, and everything generally looked right.

i looked up on their website to see what all of their models are, and found this:
"Ground on our own stone wheels, we provide you with a factory edge like no other axe on the market today." - i have mentioned before, based on handling these axes in the store, that it appears as though the edges are ground on a bench grinder. the bevels are thick and rough, and generally there are large burrs or parts of the edge that don't meet.

this doesn't really matter, however, because the average joe going to buy an axe for knocking around the woodshed won't care about the edge, and it is better for it to be robust since it is probably going to be used primarily for splitting, and likely to hit rocks and things. for the blade enthusiast, it is better because it allows you to grind exactly the kind of edge you want on it, by leaving plenty of meat there for you to work with.

some wood chopping with the stock edge. i gave up at this point because it was taking more effort than with my thinned out fiskars 14":

first, when i got home, i sanded the varnish off of the handle, and then got to work on the head. i ground the bevel back, then took it to a 600 grit belt at the edge, and polished it up on a scotchbrite wheel, followed by stropping to remove the burr.

Simon, I swear you were born 100 years later than you should have been....your choice of clothing attire is very early period. Interesting for today.

I like it.

Nice looking Axe Simon, how much $$ did it run you? Gene

nice score there simon... that looks like a great axe...

this pic is classic...:D i love the vest bro.. you like like an extra from Deadwood....:o

"Son go fetch me ma axe.." "here it is Pa, i got it...."

langston, i think i appreciate the WWW too much, but i did used to wish i was born 100 years ago. i don't normally walk around wearing this sort of thing, it just struck me to dress up like this today. normally i am much more normal looking in jeans and a t-shirt. thanks though, i like this outfit. it cost about $12. the handsewn wool pants and the vest i tailored to fit were abotu $0.05 apiece at a thrift shop, and the shirt was around $11. the suspenders were a gift from a family friend that lost a couple of hundred pounds and suddenly didn't need them any more.

gene, it cost around $65 after tax, a good deal for a good axe.

by the way, edge retention was good after doing a couple of cuts, about on par or slightly better than the wetterling i have.

Nice, Another thing I have to buy and try, The Freggin site is going to make broke!:D

i'm going to guess simon paid $60 :D

sweet axe!

LOL..I just saw that...I was looking at the edge so intently, that I didnt see that sticker there.
Simon, I just got in my Xmas Presents to myself..6 new Axes..one wetterling felling axe..that is my all time favorite, and a suprisingly great axe, a Fiskars large felling axe..around the same size handle as yours..chops well, and a box of GranforsBruks..4!!!! I love them all. I am hooked on the axes right now. Gene

gene, sounds like quite a haul!

b, those double bits crossed my mind, they had a couple in the store. i guess i'm just scared of them more than anything...and i really don't need one.

I am looking real hard at the double bits right now..and I think that I am going to spend the money and get an old one. Offg of the internet. Maybe even ebay. Gene

Nice simmon hows the snow where you live we got around 7 inches and its 5:30
What ace did you go to? i could only find some crappy hatchets and axes.

i live about 1/4 of a mile from the local Larsen Ace Hardware branch. i understand it used to be Larsen Hardware, but then they became an Ace branch, probably because they weren't making enough money.

they have the standard modern Collins axes (hardware store axes) along with the snow and nealley. they used to have a few of the fiskars models too, but now they only carry the super splitter model.

i figure we are at about 7 inches or so now. it sure is piling up quick. i heard somewhere between 7-14" by the time we're through, and then possibly more sunday night...

That's alot of snow .... we got a couple of inches here in the city now it's just a slushy freakin mess ... should make for some very hazardous driving tonight.

Simon...I dont know how much snow has fallen here..but it is pouring outta the sky. How much are the Snow and Nealy Double bits at this store of yours? I might have to send you some money sometime. Gene
