Sno-seal is great for when you don't want to soften leather -- also great waterproofing. I guess you southerners will probably have to mail-order it -- or do they sell it down south for waterproofing? That's really what it's for, for waterproofing boots. It isn't great for improving the looks of leather, by the way, but it'll preserve it and waterproof it and won't soften it. Other wax-based leather treatments have a similar effect but I think Sno-seal is the best waterproofing you can get.
Applying it is some work; you have to warm it or warm the leather, preferably both -- but one application will last a long time.
