Treatment for G-10 handles?

We currently have a thread going on the Spyderco.com Forum about folders with G-10 handles. The Brother that started it had noticed that some of his G-10 handles were not as "grippy" as he would have liked to have had them. I immediately got out all of my Spyderco knives with G-10 handles and I did notice a profound difference in a couple of my Spyderco Yojimbo handles. They were considerably "grippier" than most others.

I guess my question would be: > Does anyone know of a method, chemical treatment or any altering you could do to make a G-10 handle with better grip properties without compromising or hurting the value or structural integrity of the folder? Kind of like baseball pitchers have used rosin to give them a better grip I would think there is something for knife handles.

Why did you guys move my thread? I thought this was the right place to talk about working on knives. My thread about G-10 had to do with KNIFE HANDLES

Yah know, I was wonderin' some thoughts along those lines myself.

I was thinking a light media blasting might create a grippier surface without too much damage.

I would hope no damage to the underlying fibrous matting would occur.

You posted this in Blade Discussion and I moved it to the Toolshed. Don't feel bad though; you're not the only one to get mixed up about what forum you're in. It happens all the time ... this place has so many forums it's like a maze....

That sounds like a great idea "orthogonal1" :) What type of blasting media were you thinking of? Walnut hulls comes to mind immediately. We have a Walnut producer/company here in our area known as Hammons Walnut Co. Plus they have 8 different grits to choose from. Or could you just put the blade and the media in one of those DILLON brass tumblers>> The vibrator type? I was also thinking about a tacky laquer type treatment maybe?

Another idea along those lines that just crossed my mind would be to maybe take some diamond dust just like you use with lapping plates and take a toothbrush and work it in. I know one you guys/gals out there has an idea. Where has Yuzhua been lately:D ?

Sand them with 320 grit wet-or-dry automotive sandpaper. Don't breathe the dust!

Glad you touched on that one Bill. I attended a safety seminar on Knifemaking at the 2004 Atlanta BLADE show put on by a maker named Bill Herndon. Him and 2 other guys at the seminar said that virtually all of the handle materials have dust that is very potentially dangerous. A good friend of mine who used to work with a defense contractor told me he was astonished that they are making knife handles from Carbon Fiber. He told me that the dust from Carbon Fiber is far more dangerous than even asbestos. I would imagine that G-10 has similarities.

A great "heads up" for all of us here on BF
