Tree Removal

Just walked out and shot the tip with the laser.

12 yards (36 feet).

Since you have to stand out a bit and shoot up at an angle, I'd say 30 feet was a pretty good guess.

If you could tell Old Physics exactly how far from the base of the tree you were, then with those two values he could do the trig and calculate the height. I used to be able to do that, about 33 years ago. :p

And that's why I'm a bit worried.

I think I recognize the signs of 'overeducation' -- for which, I am a poster-child. :eek:

Don't worry. Guy down the street does tree removal for a living. Before I do anything crazy, I'll have him come take a look. For now, I'm just going to keep limbing it out.

Heh.

In my head, probably.

Man, am I a geek!! :eek:

Yeah, Pythagoras (no trig needed, just geometry) still wouldn't be quite right since the tree leans pretty good. The tip I shot isn't really in line with the base.

It would be close enough for goverment work, I guess. I should have shot my distance from the tree trunk too.

A "slice" of the old spruce became a backdrop for knife pics... ;)

Have fun, Guyon!

I could go geek, get my wife to stand directly under the tip, shoot both distances, and calculate the longer leg of the right triangle. I'm going to have to find my plumb bob. :D

Funny trig story (is there such a thing?). In high school, we had a pretty bad math teacher, and so I usually taught myself most of the material and then goofed off in class. She hated me. Anyway, I still remember the mnemonic I used for cosine, sine, and tangent.

C=A/H
S=O/H
T=O/A

Put the first letters in alphabetical order. For the other side of the equations, I used "Adolph Hitler's Oldsmobile Has Old Airbrakes," where A=Adjacent, O=Opposite, and H=Hypotenuse. Makes no sense, I know, but it stuck. I taught it to my cousin, who was a year behind me. He is now a math teacher and teaches the same mnemonic to his students.

I'm waiting for the lawsuit.

The only big tree I have in Sonoma is a Redwood. If I tried to cut it I'd have Skunk out here hugging it. :grumpy:

Boy, that tree is ripe for the "Chuckete'"
It will take off a 2 1/2" - 3" limb in one wack...
I've been getting it out and removing a branch about 2X's thicker than the base on that tree 8" at a time.

Man , that thing is a brute (the knife)...I make myself cut all the way though before I quit and go back in the house.
It's my new work out plan... I figure the Chuckette' isn't worth much if I can't swing it.

Be safe...trees kill.

I think you were right with the Darwin Award part. I had a neighbor outside taking photos as I was finishing it off. I presume to sell to the paper in the aftermath of the expected tragedy... pessimist! ;)

I may limb it out, wench the tip down to the ground, and see how far I can fling a cow. Now to find a cow... :eek:

Get enough scotch in him and he'd man one end of the crosscut.
:D

Final update.

Does this make me a HOG? :confused:

Oh, wait...

I was trying to guess the INFI line up in the other thread...

I was spot on!!! :D

Glad you got'er done safely... now comes the fun of choppin' it up.

At some point, as I make my way down from the top, I'm probably going to switch from INFI to Poulan. :D
