Tree sap stains and wood burns on bit?

Oak have alot of tannin Inside of them, thats whats used to make vegetal tanned leather, it doesnt surprise me that the bit color was affected.

Yep, I've seen some pretty intense deep blue in the wood around an old nail or piece of wire that oak had grown around. It's a bit surprising that it would be that quick to color the edge of the ax, but with it being relatively early summer, maybe the sap is running fast.

My vote is to make sure the edge is sharp and chop some more wood. I've had very rusty axes become shiny in short order just using them. It's part of the usage of the tool.

Tannin plus iron plus moisture makes for a black stain.

This sounds like sap.

Another thing you can try is that kitchen cleaner - white liquid carrying a fine abrasive.
