Was wondering if anyone has tried one of the trend powered respirator helmets. A wood working buddy has one and loves it. I tried it out, and was amazed as I have a foot and a half long goatee. It has been a nightmare trying to get a good seal with any respirator I have tried. It doesn't say it is for metal, but I don't see why it wouldn't filter out metal dust. If anyone has experience with one please let me know.

I have had one for 10-15 years. It is a good respirator. Only drawback is it is a tad heavy. I use my Air-cap II most of the time. It is really light. Both are fine for normal particulate. They are not for toxic fumes. When grinding Micarta and similar stuff that is noxious, wear a regular 3M respirator with organic vapor cartridges.

Tips on getting the most from respirators with filter elements, like the Trend, is to vacuum or blow them out regularly. One way to lighten them is to make up a battery pack and stick it in your back pocket with just a wire and plug going to the helmet.

Has anyone ever tried rigging up a CPAP machine for this? Seems you might just build a sealed box to put it in and attached some 3M filters or similar to box vents?
There is a huge array of face masks, some of which wouldn't bee too bad. You'd just have to rig the hose to run behind you.
Wouldn't be good having that caught in the grinder belt.

A lot of bigger shops use umbilical hoods and masks. They just plug the hose into an air port near the machines. The air is supplied by a blower with HEPA filters, usually in another room.
