Tri-Ad lock from Cold Steel SR1 Lite Tanto Failing Multiple Times Under Hard Use Test

You gonna have to ask Joe. I am not the same guy.

I don't think it's dumb at all. I think that hard use tests are very valid.
The blade pivot bent or loosened with his prolonged beating of the knife, which gave the lock enough leeway to slip out of its mating with the right directional force.

Still miles ahead of Spyderco and Benchmade, and pretty much every other company. My one complaint about Cold Steel is that they don't use thread locker on the pivot screw.

There’s language I’d like to use here that would violate and disrespect bladeforums rules, so I won’t. But it would be fitting as to how stupid that video is.

That is not blade testing. It’s not valid testing for any folding knife. Beating it until it breaks shows nothing. The knife or lock didn’t fail here, the user failed.

Cars are crash tested for safety but not dropped out of an airplane.

failure testing i enjoy, but the way he does it i don't care for. the problem with his setup is he wants to break it. instead of setting a standard of 20 spine whacks to pass, he just beats it until it breaks.

the issue is its hard to compare to any other knife since the amount of hits and smashing and prying setup etc is different with every knife in every video he does.

so while it shows a knife can take a random beating or not ya can't compare it to any other knives equal performance.

I much prefer Demkos or that Russian guys testing with set amounts to pass and consistent testing with each knife.

plus the 🤡 tactical costuming doesn't appeal to me, but too each their own.

If by "that Russian guy" you mean vininull, I agree. I like his tests. 👍
I dont know his name but he opens a tin can during his test with the knife....

he follows a pretty standard format that includes spine walking, over striking, stabbing steel sheet, cutting aluminum sheet, not in that order.....but stuff like this....

That's him. 👍

To the defense of Cold Steel there are some things I would like to add:

1 - The lock didn't failed an enormous but I mean an enormous amount of spine whacks prior to the fail. Much more than the 5 spine whacks that Cold Steel does.

2 - We don't know if he sabotaged the lock in some way. It is a possibility.

3 - We don't know how many abuse he did off camera.

4 - Maybe I shouldn't say that the Tri-Ad failed. Maybe I should say that the knife simple broke from so much abuse.

5 - It was possible that the Tri-Ad failing was due to pivot deformation from again the enormous amount of prying he did or maybe the pivot simple was to loose.

Still the Tri-Ad failed at a test for the first time and it's kind sad because I always love when this kind of testers failed at that before.

The Triad did not fail from what I watched on the video. The pivot screw broke.

I don't think there is anything to defend. The knife took an enormous amount of abuse before the pivot broke.

That the knife survived as long as it did shows how well it did. It's even more impressive considering this is a budget folder.

I'll have to say that is one tough azz knife and blade. My spyderco police would have snapped in the first two minutes on that log prying episode. I only have the two s35 versions but think I might pick up the lite as well. It looks like an easy fix though just needs a new pivot. Thanks for posting this info.
